Show IS IT A CONCESSION I The Question of Salt Shippers Up Ij I j Again 1 The publication the dispatch in 1 THE HERALD of Sunday in relation to fo the Union Pacifics action on the salt rate between this city and Butte j caused no little commotkm yesterday It Although it is not what the Alice people asked said one salt man yesterday yes-terday it is nevertheless a concession that suits me Mr Needham of foe Union Pacific informed me this morning morn-ing that all points between Salt Lake t and Willard City will be common that we can ship salt from here to Butte for the same rate as from Willard City or any intermediate points It virtually > makes an open market and that is all I ask all that I could desire is to oe placed upon an equal footing with other people or firms engaged in the same business With the present tariff salt can be laid down in Butte for from 10 50 to 11 per ton a difference of at least 1 per ton the j former charge being 15 As Butte uses 20000 tons a year of the product of our Great Salt Lake this action will be a saving to that town of from somewhere some-where in the neighborhood of 80000 per annum but the greatest satisfaction to Salt Lakers is that they can now enter the market and compete for trade where heretofore the Adams Keisel Company hld a monopoly There were others however who I did not shitre this view and they were of the opnion that they would still bs abut out throuih a failure fail-ure of the Union Pacihc to furnish cars owing to the fact of their interest in the Oaden Syracuse road which was built as our readers will remember solely for the purpose of carrying salt from Syracuse in which the Union Pacific is also reported to be interested i Mr Cone of the Utah Central was seen on the matter yesterday and in response to a query said he had received nothing official and could not say until he had been more fully advised what course would be pursued by his road He knew nothing about making Salt Lake and Willard the limit in which salt destined for Butte wuld be received at9 per ton Further advices ad-vices will probably sat at rest this qustion and may have a tendency to a art in motion once again the Alice work at Butte City It was hinted by Mr W E Hall who was in Salt Lake on Saturday that the probabilities were that the Alice would be booming again in a short time |
