Show A Memorable Reunion NEW YORK October 24The survivors surviv-ors of the first regiment of New York volunteers who under Colonel Jonathan Jona-than Stevenson left New York in September 1J346 for the settlement and conquest of California long before the discovery of gold held a banquet here this evening at Martinellis where the old experiences of those California pioneers were lived over again assisted by a choice menu Many of the members mem-bers were settled in California and could not be present Among those is the veteran Colonel Stevenson DOW in his 83d year after whom the regiment was named President Major Francis D Clark gave a history of the expedition from the start until its disbaudmcnt at Monterey Mon-terey General William T Herman waS tneir post adjutant Stirring times this brave band of men saw during the intervening in-tervening time but they saw the annexation an-nexation of California with its wealth of gold largely as the fruit of their labors Jonn H Welsh Josiah Evans and George Vanvechtem also spoke There are now living 158 of the I 000 men who set out on that memorable expedition Besides those mentioned the following were present James E Nuttman John H Welsh William H Williams Jacob W Norris Gilbert E Dean Andrew W Moore Frank Darkey Stuart Alden W Jones from Ohio and Andrew J Ward from Wisconsin Wis-consin |
