Show MYRTlE PEEKS SECOND DAY A Very SUm but Very Well Pleased Audience Ihs crowd in attendance at the Jordan Driving Park yesterday afternoon after-noon on the occasion of Miss Peeks second appearance J was not such a one as to cause any great amount of enthusiasm en-thusiasm in the breast of either the lady or her manager There was doubt in the minds of some as to whether she would consent to ride Approached on this subjtcc by a reporter she said I certainly shall ride I have never dig appointed an audante yet and do DOt care to commence now A few minutes later she emerged from her room and was soon on the track this time seated on Athol a handsome bay whom his mistiess found considerable difficulty in controlling Tne first event was a half mile dash against the riderless Long View The latter took the lead from the start and Kept It until near the homestretch Then was the whip plied vigorously Athol and Miss I Peek passed the judges stand a Dinner by a head in 103 THE ROMAN 6TANDINO RACE was the one event looked forward to however and when the little lady appeared ap-peared with Ghost and Athol in hand aha was warmly applauded Athol again acted rather meanly and there was some difficulty in procuring astart For a second both animals stoad still the grooms loosed their hold of the bits there was the sharp swish of a whip and Miss Peek came tearing past the grand stand at a rate that caused more than one to express fears as to her safety It did not take long however to convince the audience audi-ence that the had the animals well in hand As she neared the turn the whip i was not spared and it was a magnificent magnifi-cent sight that greeted the eyes of the audience as she came down the homestretch home-stretch with the speed of the wind her brightcolored ribbons flying and her cheeks aglow witu the exercise She passed under the wire in 56 oe and three qJarter seconds better than the day previous and modestly acknowledged acknowl-edged the cheers of the audience THBEE MILES WITH SIX CHANGES The five mile race against time changing horses at the end of each mile advertised was not given but in its stead a three mile race with a change at the end of each half mie The horses used were Regal Athol and Eddie bmith each bearing a lady ordinary sidesaddle side-saddle whit the equestrienne was attired tired in a blue velvet riding dress and a jcckey j cap At the end of each half mile she rode up alongside of a fresh horse and was lifted from one to the other by a sturdy groom This proceeding pro-ceeding occupied but a couple of seconds sec-onds an 1 away she flew urging each animal to his utmost speed Twice the horses got well under way before she caught the stirrup but a trifle like this did not seem to annoy her in the least neither did she slacken her pace on account ac-count of it Tne three miles were made in 5 51 and at the conclusion of this race she rode slowly back to the stables where shs was soon surrounded by a crowd of people anxious to congratulate con-gratulate her She accepted the congratulations con-gratulations goodnaturedly A PURSE EAIED When Dr Benedict came forward and tendered htr a purse of 20 which he and Mr Chas Auer had collected on the grounds she appeared somewhat embarrassed for a moment but thanked the donors kindly and after a few seconds sec-onds chat disappeared There were none present who did not express a regret re-gret that her audience had not been ten times as large as it was It is a longtime long-time since any combination so deserv I lug of the public patronage has received i ceived so little encouragement from Salt Lakers |
