Show AT HARRISONS HOME OfficeSeekers Upon the President lect 1 TREASURY PORTFOLIO WILL DO The IrishAmerican Protective Society So-ciety Are la the Field Already for Their RewardOther Motel INDIANAPOLIS November 13 The Presidentelect was in receipt of another an-other very heavy mail today which for the present seems to be occupying all his time He was at work early this morning in his library and excepting a few hours time given to a reception inthe afternoon he put in the entire day at his desk and was busily engaged en-gaged as late as 9 oclock tonight dictating dic-tating letters W H H Miller General Gen-eral Harrisons law partner was acting as his private secretary His law practice i prac-tice demanding his entire attention in his place General Harrisons son Russell B is now acting An unusual number of congratulatory letters are arriving from the south among them are many Democrats who uniformly state that although the result re-sult was contrary to their wishes and expectations yet they accept the peoples peo-ples verdict with good grace not a few even stating that thty believe the result of the election will prove beneficial bene-ficial to the south Senator Allisons congratulatory letter let-ter was received today The committee of citizens having in charge the demonstration for next Saturday Sat-urday met in the New Denison House today ann decided that politics had interfered with business long enough and that therefore there would be no further demonstration attempted Judge Woods of the Federal Court today charged the federal grand jury io regard to the law concerning electrons elec-trons ConThe News this evening prints this bit of interesting political gossip The first suggestion that has been made to General Harrison since his election regarding re-garding the appointments came from the leaders the Irish antiCleveland movement four of whom Dr Carrell of Philadelphia and Messrs Davoy Brslin and Ryan of New York arrived in this city last saturday but returned to the east yesterday Efforts were ft etpeeat4hepnblmhomiern > > inc the purpose ot their vblmut1tier did not hesitate to say they were here in the interest of a representative repre-sentative American of extraordinary ability whom the Irish citizens would be pleased to see honored by the administration The reoresentative American in whose elevation ele-vation theyare interested was ascertained ascer-tained is Wharton Barker the Philadelphia Phila-delphia banker Wnen Carroll Devoy and others began their political missionary work in the interest of the Republican candidate they formed an organization known as tile National IrishAmerican Protection Society which as a political mvement was entirely independent ofthe Republican National Committee and received from it no pecuniary aid in defraying the necessary expenses Wharton Baker was their backer Carroll Devoy and others who we e among the leaders of the movement are anxious should receive some reward re-ward They were so kindly received that Devoy ventured to expain to General Harrison that the members of the IrishAmerican Protection Pro-tection Organzation felt that they were too young in the Republican Party to expect any official recognition but it would afford them much gratification if the representative American who had been especially friendly to them as well as to General Harrison himself should be honored by the new administration adminis-tration General Harrisons reply is said to have been neither enccuraging nor discouraging The visitors expressed a doubt to their friends here if Barker would be disposed to accept anything Below the treasury portfolio It has been suggested however that if he should not be called into the cabinet there are strong reasons for the belief that he would make a good minister to China |
