Show Favorable to the Short Line BOSTON November 13The arbitrators arbitra-tors to whom was submitted the question ques-tion of a division of rate on all through business between the Union Pacific and Oregon Short Line rendered a decision deemed slightly favorable to the Short Line The report save the general statement state-ment that the Oregon Short Line has been allowed 1U or P4 miles to one mile of the Union Pacific IS NOT VIRTUALLY CORRECT In many oases the arbitrary rate has been allowed the Short Line Of 1 55 per I ton which only amounts to 721 per ton per mile which rate cannot be considered consid-ered a fair allowance as it is lower than the trunk lines west of Chicago and but little higher than the truik lines east af Chicago with their enormous tonnage and rich local territory During Dur-ing the same year the Union Pacific averaged 149 per mile and the Atchison Atchi-son Topeka Santa Fe averaged 1789 per ton per mile We have reached the conclusion that the division recommended recom-mended by the Government directors In 1882 of i to 1 < iii IS AN EQUITABLE DIVISION f for passenger and freight traffi to and from the Oregon Short Line and its branches for all freight hauled to and 1 from Granger to Pocatello that goes I over the Utah Northern and it is simply where hauled from one point to the other that the mileage rate is allowed al-lowed which should be the same as thatallowed the main line We would suggest that the adjustment is retroactive re-troactive and does not cover the entire operations of the road from its completion com-pletion and that interest be allowed the Union Pacific on all amounts found by the settlement this basis to be due for money advanced to pay the interest on its bonded indebtedness While from the papara submitted it is perhaps per-haps hardly to be expeoted thatthe foregoing modifications of the contract will materially decrease at first the indebtedness of the Short Line already accrued it is believed the increasing volume of business from the Territory Terri-tory traversed by that road wIn prevent pre-vent any augmentation it fcjrd in time give the stock an appreciative value |
