Show THE HEBREW CONGREGATIONS One of the Old Eltuals Gives a History of Bnai Israel To the Editor of THB HBBASB As the Latterday J dean Disciples aw fit to exhibit themselves in print regarding the differences existing among the Hebrews in this city and bring it betore the public one of the first originators of the aggregation Bnai Israel deeming it just to all concerned con-cerned gives a history of the origin and the manner in which the congregation was conducted up to the present date so that the public may gain a full understanding under-standing on the subject In the 1873 tile late Sam Kahn Louis Eegsel year Isadora Morns M 0 Phillips Mr Gansler Isaac Woplf and 1 Walters assembled at the office of Mr Ganslei in this city and originated what is known as the Congregation Bnai Israel its object was to organize a Hebrew Religious and Educational Society but having no funds an appeal was made to the public for aid A ball was given in the Salt Lake Theatre I which netted 5UOO Isadore Morris belling bel-ling 200 tickets M C Phillips 150 while Mrs Kegcel and Mrs Kann by their determined efforts sold a considerable number more and aided to make of the affair complete success This was the starting point of tho above congregation A general subscription by our coreligionists co-religionists and the public was next started for the purpose of raisins rais-ins sufficient funds for building there and conducting a school and to this was a most generous response Everything went on flourishing under the direction of the following named gentleman who presided over the congregation at different times Samuel Kahn Charles Popper Henry Siegel and M C Phillips during these different periods they finally succeeded suc-ceeded in obtaining a sufficient amount bv annual entertainments to build the present building known as the Jewish Synagoge when finished it was dedicated dedi-cated under the old strict orthodox form and the services held therein up the old to last year were strictly under ritual AS now practiced by all the arthodox congregations throughout the United States and elsewhere Everything went on harmoniously until l Mr Leon Strauss was engaged here to conduct a Hebrew school and actas minister the Latterday Judean Disciples with Mr Leon Strauss then introduced the latest Judean revelations Through these new revelations discontent dis-content set in among the disciples as well as the minister and from a full attendance at the services it dwindled down to half a dozen devotees so that the minister left two months ocfore the time of his engagement expired The holidays being near at hand the vice president called a meeting of his congregation con-gregation for the purpose ofmaking arrangements ar-rangements for the services on those holidays which it was in tended should be conducted by some of its members At the meeting in August last a resolution was introduced to restore the old ritual and this was carried with some A missions or amendments thereto committee for thepurpose of arranging the ritual was appointed but beim un able to agree the president called a meeting the following week and after calling the meeting to order he announced an-nounced that the procteJings of the preceding meeting were null and void and of no effect tnereupon some of the members concluded to withdraw and hold separate services under thc old HebreW ritual and this without malice or ill feeling in the least respect to anyone any-one whatever S |
