Show FINANCE AND MTNTN Views of Two Local Merchants Mer-chants A LIVELY CRESCENT BREEZE Improvement In the EaatDried I fruit CropBank Receipts of Ore and Bullion General There has been little or nothing done during the week in the way of local securities se-curities The leading houses have commenced com-menced their fall announcements as an inspection of the SUNDAY HERUD will show and in most cases we learn that dealers have laid in supplies nearly equal to those of previous years Considerable Con-siderable caution has been exercised in buying however and a few dealers have cut down their orders Mr 9 PTeasdel states that the dried fruit crop of the Territory will be double this season what it was last Prices are considerably lower now than they were a year ago he said to our reporter mainly on account of the cheapness of foreign fruits and the strong competition compe-tition we have always had to contend with from California I learn from r trade circulars that grapes and apples are so low there that farmers feed them to their pigs in preference to selling them An encouraging sign for us however is found in a quotation from the circular that apricots are grow fug scarce this I hope will have the effect of stiffening up prices here I am receiving inquiries from all parts of the Territory but as yet I have no demand for dried fruits and am simply buying on the chance of a future market 1 have two car loads noW on hand awaiting some request for them Mr S J Nathan one of our most careful and most successful clothing merchants has returned from a trip east He informed a reporter that although though he was very wary in forming his opinions he was force to conclude from what he saw that there was a very material and a very general betterment In trade circles In our line he said dealers are so independent that you can hardly talk to them You cant get your orders filled there are not tailors enough to be obtained There are no skilled mechanics idle and all the mills have again started up Dealers say their trade is better this fall than it has been very several years previous This report is borne out by the following lowing summary from Bradstreet The general business situation as reported re-ported by wire to Bmdstreets continues quite as favorable as reported last week The activity is mainly confined as heretofore noted to print cloths bleached cottons wool and boots and shoes but the feature of the week is found in the improvement noted in eastern iron markets Notwithstanding Notwith-standing the reported gain in this line at the south and west manu facturers and dealers east of the Vlleghanies had failed to report a like gain Within the past week the improvement im-provement has become more general The inquiry for pig iron has increased and one sale at New York is noted of 7000 tons of forge at 515 for which 1450 had been offered While none in the trade admits the likelihood of a boom all appear satisfied that there is better business in sight The number of failures in the Pacific States and Territories for the week ending end-ing 5th was lower than tor many weeks and months previous It was sixteen against twenty three in the week previous and dgainst twentythree for the same period in last year Ore and Bullion The receipts of ere and bullion at the various banks this city for the week ending Saturday Crescent stock has taken a big tumble downward A few days ago it was selling for 122 On Friday Carney was rushing about unable tfl find any takers at 95 and even at 90 cents It was thought that the payment Of the dividend would rather tend to stiffen the stock and there is another reason why it was expected that Crescent Cres-cent vfoiild be scarce on the market It has been an open secret for some time past that all was not peace and amity m the tents of the Michigan syndicate and as far as can be learned front the most authentic sources the following is the cause of thefalling out The Park City Smelting Works were builfbr the Witheys under the impression that could be kept profitably running on Crescent ore Experience soon demonstrated demon-strated that this was a fallacy and the Witheys who are considerable mem bers of the Michigan syndicate have of late it is said been trying to win the Crescent directors to the notion that the smelting works were necessary to the continued prosperity ef the company The directors or the Ferry wing of the directors as report has it refused to see this and hence the strife and dissension The meeting of the stockholders occurs next month and again report says there will be a big endeavor made to oust President Ferry and to put into his place a man who can be made to seethe see-the expediency of buying the smelting works There is little question as to th < side which local stockholders will twin this battle most of them are certainly Averse making any etpen sive acquisitions the management of rthe mine is now conducted as economically as it can well be and the local holders are not apt to range themselves on the side of any change wbich must result in a still more decidedly foreign administration than that which they are now under It is impossible of course to know how the is held by the two stock Michigan parties par-ties but from all indications the coming com-ing election will result in a horse board of directors In view of all this it is somewhat strange that there should not be some lively skirmishing after stock for election purposes this however may come later Oar reports show that the ore con tinues to come down regularly so that the fall in price can be due iOj nothing but the stringency of the local money market The Alice The new hoisting machinery at the Alice mine is working and runs as smoothly as any hoisting engine ever put in action The work of raising the hoisting works and putting on the new roof has been commenced and will be pushed to a completion as rapidly as possible The Alice mine never looked better than it does at present The stopes on the SCO 400 and 000 j foot levels are looking unusually well and are pro ducing the usual quantity of ore The south crosscut on the 800foot level is in 80 feet from the shaft and has to be carried in 100 feet more before the vein is encountered The north crosscat on the same level is in CO feet and will have to be driven 150 feet more before the ledge is cut In about two weeks the new doubledeck cages will be in operation opera-tion at the Alice The two mills are working to their full capaeit and every thing is running in a highly satisfactory manner The mills produced over 100 000 worth of bullion in July The affairs of the Alice company were never in a better condition than they are at present and Superintendent Hall thinks the company have many long years of pro perity before them Miner Gth The Horn Silver Sale Frank Martin and wife have gone to Salt Lake City to sign deeds for the sale of the famous Horn Silver mine The mine went for 55000 5000 of which has been paid Mr Martin InterIdaho Apex Thirtyfive cents has been freely offered and refused during the week for the stock Mr Chas Read secretary of the company speaks m the most rose colored terms of tie future of the mine Another shipment will not be down before be-fore the close of the month Horn Silver A meeting of the company is an nonnced for October Gth at 12 m at this office in Frisco Let us hope that something some-thing encouraging may come it |
