Show Arrested for Giving Bribes Nw YOKE October 19James W Feshay expresident cf the Broadway Railway another of the parties indicted in-dicted by the Grand Jury for giving bribes to the boodle aldermen was arrested this morning and also taken to the district attorneys office Police Insnectot Byrnesr this morning morn-ing arrested Jake Sharp of Broadway Broad-way Railroad notoriety on a bench warrant issued on an indictment found against him by the Grand Jury for bribi g the boodle aldermen to vote lor the Broadway Real f anchiS James Richmond president of the Broadway Rairoad was also taken into custody charged with tbe same offense Both prisoners were conveyed to police headquarters aud the later will be taken to the district attorneys otfici4 and arraigned in pourt James W Foshay expresident of the Broadway Broad-way and other parties indicted tor I giving bribes to the boodle aldermen are also arrested Intelligence of the arrest of the three I partners in the supposed guilt spread rapidly and crowds began to gather at the district attorneys office by 10 ocock It had been the general impression im-pression they would be arrested soon and it was rnmored they had been indicted No indictment has been found against Slurp nor was there any new indictment against Richmond and Foabay It is expected that indictments wll be made against the thre exaldermen Charley Waite was brought downtown down-town from the house of detention after the arrest of the alleged bribegivers in the custod of his keeper and arrived at the distrct attorneys office at 1030 am He hurried Waite away from the gaze of the curious who filled the corridors and took him i into the private office Shortly afterwards Bright counsel for Sharp arrived and held a consultation consul-tation with DistrictAttorney Martin in which PoliceInspector Steers participated par-ticipated It was learned that Sharp and Richmond are to be kept at the I police headquarters until indications could be drawn up when they will be I Drought down to plead in court and give bail should any be needed Judge 09wing fixed the bail at 50 000 each in the cases of Sharp and Foshay and 25000 additional in the case of Richmond who already under that amount District Attorney Martin Mar-tin in his original motion asked that the defendants be put under 100000 bail each ExAlderman Waite was before the Grand Jury about noon and gave evidence evi-dence upon which in all probability the indictment against the alleged bribe givers has been found Just before be-fore recess a batch of indictments was handed Judge Cowing soon afterwards after-wards three coaches containing Jake Sharpe Mr Fqrshay Inspector Byrnes and two assistants that left the police headquarters about oclock drew up in front of the general sessions ses-sions court house The party alighted and entered the District Attorneys office where they were obliged to await the return of the judge who was at lunch The court room was crowded when they were arraigned The court fixed the bail at 50000 each for Sharp and Forshay and 25000 in the case of Richmond who is already under 25000 on another indictment The bonds were perfected and the prisoners were set at liberty Thomas B Kerr another of the indicted bribers subsequently appeared and was released on bail The indictments against the prisoners charged each with having bribed one or another of the exAldermen by pay ing each 20000 to Vote in favor of granting the Broadway Surface Railroad Rail-road franchise |
