Show 1 CACHE VALLEY I tt I Progressive Logan Evidences of ProsperityThe Canal Railroading Rail-roading Etc Etc LOGANCAOHE Go June 2 82 Editors Herald It was said of Cache Valley by a railroad magnate from the easta gentleman by the way who has traveled muehUIt is the finest valley val-ley in the United States To a person less enthusiastic thai this gentleman may seem to have been there is much here to admire More admirable however than all the fascinations of scenery and beauty of location are the evidences which tell of those hard determined efforts ef-forts which have built up permanent perman-ent homes for prosperous commonwealth common-wealth In and around Logan there has been such progress made in planting and fostering industries and in beautifying the once unseemly stretches that even those who have been most sanguine in watching these developments from a distance are surprised when brought in contact con-tact with the actual progress made Although not subject to the fluctuations fluctua-tions which more central localities of business have experiencedLogan may be said to have enjoyed a genuine genu-ine boom during tIle last few I years Within a remarkably short period the whole of the land lying I along the river bed known as the Island has been converted from a vast wilderness of willows into attractive at-tractive homes for more than 150 families and presents a very interesting inter-esting appearance Pour thousand acres of fertile land will soon be under culthation on the plateau or elevated tableland table-land to the east of the city This picturesque spot has been rendered valuable by the bringing out of a canal from the Logan river This is certainlyone of the most gigantic efforts yet put forth The canal taps the river about a mile and a half up the canyon from which point to the land in question there is a deep cut one and a half miles in length with twentyone feet fall through solid flinty limestone lime-stone along the precipitous northern north-ern side of the canyon which has taken an incredibly enormous quantity of powder to accomplish the blasting When completed it will have cost some S0 nnn Phi same work at the rate of wages paid in Salt Lake Valley could not be done for less than 50000 In some places it has the appearance of tun nelling being as much as fifty feet in depth in solid rock It is expected ex-pected the water will be turned in sometime very soon and farming i and gardening begun Surveyor Anson has already laid off a large number of city lots and the prospects pros-pects are good for its becoming at an early day a thickly populated district Something that will be greeted with appreciation by those interested inter-ested in matters of education is the fact that the beautiful tract of land to the southwest of the city cover ing an area of 10000 acres which was left by the late President Brig ham Young as an endowment for the establishment of a university has been nearly all rented out to ag riculturists and is already netting several thousad dollars There are in Logan to day in course of construction between twentyfive and thirty buildings nearly onehalf of which are business busi-ness houses Messrs Lundberg Gari the enterprising contractors and builders alone have more than a dozen structures under way and have just completed several others Their building contracts are quite numerous in Idaho and the north also where they have been very successful suc-cessful An almost incredibly large business in this line is done by the U O Manufacturing and Building Company which has four sawmills in constant use The most notable job in hand at present is the build ing of the county courthouse which promises to be both elegant and imposing im-posing It was designed by architect archi-tect T 0 Angell jr and is to be built of brick with white freestone I corners Its base is 52x68 feet and i will be 37 feet to the square The tower which will rise 38 feet from the main structure is both odd and beautiful and will set off the build ng to admirable advantage one of the finest business houses recently built is that occupied by Messrs Cardon v Thatcher on Main street It is a large three story brick structure handsomely finished This progressive firui has opened out one of the largest and most elegant lines of furniture house furnishings clocks watches jewelry etc that can be seen in the territorv It seems almost unwarrantably unwar-rantably large Another imposing structure is that lately added to the premises of Zions Board of Trade which greatly facilitates their fast increasing business further south on Main street is a large frame store just finished in which Geo Barber Son have opened business as wholesale and commission merchants and dealers in wagons and machinery Their shipments into the north of potatoes and grain amount to something some-thing large already The shipping of grain and provisions over the I Utah Northern is one of the pay I ing enterprises in Logan and one which promises some permanency Encouraged by its great success in manufactures the U o Foundry is enlarging its premises so as to I have double the facilities with which they worked in the past This is one of the most commendable institutions insti-tutions in the valley la the face of powerful competition they are manufacturing and building mills for all parts of the north and even I in this struggle have never failed to afford a nice dividend which is now something handsome Cache Valley and in fact the northern country generally owes much of their present prosperity to the railroad The traffic over the Utah and Northern is something enormous Every train for the north is crowded excessively rendering render-ing it necessary to attach extra cars It istfreported that as many as 2000 men and SOD teams are at work on the grade of the Oregon Short Line mostly having been shipped by rail over the Utah and Northern The pay car which has just passed along the road distributed distrib-uted 65000 amongst the railroad employees This sum covers the running expenses of the Union Pacific Pa-cific between Ogden and Butte City Superintendent Thatcher has an able corps of men along the line Lately they showed their strong feelings of regard for their superIntendent superin-tendent by presenting him with a handsome souvenir Drummers are infesting the town in large nnmbers The Cache Valley Val-ley House which has prided itself in being fully adequate to even emergencies has been sorely crowded Mr Blanchard proprietor of the Logan House is putting up a fine three story addition to his hotel in which he purposes accommodating a host of drummers with sample rooms The town is actually v covered with posters advertising the laundry business bus-iness The enterprising Sam Lung and companion have fought hard to obtain footing in Logan but more probably because boiled shirts are not so much in demand than on account ac-count of any prejudices against the Mongolians The citizens have declared de-clared if not in word certainly inactions in-actions the Chinese must go The other morning the premises occupied occu-pied by the ambitious shirt dressers were found vacated No apology I no nothing they had quietly left C R Savage Esq has just taken a splendid photograph of Logan from the cresceutof the templewhich he purposes bringing out in his album al-bum views of Utah D |
