Show I f r 5 m The Contented Cases Washington TheHouse adjourned ad-journed early this afternoon having seated William M Lowegreenback republican contestant for the seat occupied by General Joe Wheeleras representative from the Eighth I Alabama District The republicans say that for the past two weeks the democratic party has made for itself a record that will more than compensate com-pensate for all the sins of omission that the bourbon political prospects I have charged to the account of the republicans Prior to the recent filibustering operations of the democrats dem-ocrats the majority gave Lynch of Mississippi the shoestring district seat occupied by Chalmers Lynch was rightfully electel by several thousand majority and the facts in his case were so clear that the democrats refused to filibuster against his admission When the MacbeyDibble case was called up the next day they refused re-fused by the interposition of dilatory dila-tory motions to allow it to be considered con-sidered A quorum of republicans I was present part of the time and it was only when the rules were J amended in accordance with precedent I pre-cedent that the majority was enabled to do the work that the people i peo-ple hud elected it to perform Today To-day Lowe was seated by a vote of I 149 to 3 every democrat save the I three who voted in the negative withholding his vote to deprive the majority if possible from performing its constitutional functions While the majority in Lows case was not so large as in the cases of Lynch and Mackey the facts in his favor were quite as clearly established as were those affecting the rights of the gentleman first mentioned A political polit-ical significance attaches to the prolonged pro-longed fight in the House over these election contests A republican leader today said Members of the republican party at south will understand under-stand hereafter that their allies at the north are determined de-termined to see justice done them When republicans are rightfully elected fo the House in southern districts they will be seated Next week the regular business will be taken up On Monday a suspension of the rules will be in order and the general deficiency appropriation bill will be considered the day following The contested election case of Smalls vs Tillman from the Fifth South Carolina district has been considered by the subeommittee of the elections committee and it is expected a report in favor of Smalls will be made to the House from the full committee early in the week |
