Show 1HAT DElVE I SALT LAKE CITY June 31832 Editors Herald In regard to that drive down Fifth East street along Penitentiary Road and up West Temple street and the proposed grading culvert ing and bridging of the same the idea is good and its development desirable de-sirable The reasonable improvement improve-ment of the road for public use is a thing always to be commended But the practice of racing or anything any-thing like it on a public road will hardly meet with favor from the general public however much desired de-sired by the few who are especially interested in fast horses The objections ob-jections to fast driving on a public road are the attending danger and the unpleasantness otherwise For when no accident attends fast driving driv-ing on the road every slower team must get out of the way and fre quentlyjin double quick time which to many people would destroy all the pleasure of the drive Nor is it reasonable that loaded teams should be discouraged from travelling on any public road One mans team has as good a right on a public road as another mans team and if there is a good public road it is quite as good for the heavily loaded team as for the lightly loaded To shut off a public highway high-way from use by any portion of the public is manifestly not right Let the drive be put in order for any bodys and everybodys team with no aristocratic exclusiveness about it Let it be a pleasure drive too not a race track so that any person with a team loaded or unloaded or without a team of any kind may enjoy a ride or walk if he wishes may take his pleasure any time over that six mile stretch without special danger of being run over or crowded off ever and anon by fast teams in their trials of speed Strained rapidity is only one kind of pleasure and a kind enjoyed by only a few persons especially on a public road On all public roads fast riding or driving should be discouraged dis-couraged for the safety and happiness hap-piness of the general public BRANDY SNAP |
