Show A Case of Talk About 3 oclock on Tuesday afternoon after-noon a young fellow apparently newly in town became exceedingly drunk and went up Main street cursing and swearing and insulting everybody and striking persons He was arespecter neither of age nor sex and struck at grayheaded men women and children alike When in front of the Coop ho struck at Mr Richard Lambert who grabbed the crazy fellow toppled him over in the ditch and held him there until he was thoroughly soaked and cried for mercy He was then released re-leased and went off around the Council House corner Officer Chas Crowand a person called on by him seeing the affairstarted after and overtook the young man and lead him down main street He walked as far as AsmUisens store all right but reaching there declared hd did not want to go any farther and dropped ta the ground They dragged him for a short distance and then littel him on his feet lie began to kick and scuffle and when opposite Dwyers store Crow pulled out his clubstruck the prisoner on the head and felled him A very large crowd had assembled as-sembled who discussed the action freely and unfavorably Meanwhile the young man was carried to the City Hall on a truck and placed in jail The action of Oflicer Crow was the subject of much criticism of a most unfavorable character and almost resulted in two or three fights It is held that any number of persons would have rendered assistance as-sistance if they had been called on and while it is not denied that the fellow kicked and struggled it is nevertheless maintained that he could have been taken to jail without with-out having to be struck on the head to keep him quiet Itwas also argued that had Mr Crow been alone and unable to get assistance tae case would have been entirely different but as the arrest could I have been accomplished without the I use of the billet it is claimed the act was unwarranted It matters little how aggravated the case may be that induces an officer to strike a piiaoner there are always those wh will call it brutal About the present pre-sent ease the HERALD knows nothing noth-ing and there are so many conflicting conflict-ing statements that it is difficult to base an opinion upon any But even if Mr Crow was justified it can only be regretted that a magistrate magis-trate and a member of the City Council should be placed in sucU a unfortunate predicamen that he is forced to stnke i man on thejieac with a heavy billy It ceruml does not add to his personal nor official of-ficial dignity |
