Show COAL VILLE e4 Interesting Notes From the Weber > i Editors Herald The pretty village of Co lville so snugly situated and so attractive In its cleanliness is adding to its public pub-lic building a splendid assembly ball to be known as The Summit Stake Tabernacle It stands on a lot 10x15 rods and is so located that the grounds surrounding it may bema be-ma e acceEory to its imposing ap pearance The external dimensions of the building are about 110x50 feet and the height to top of tower will be about 75 feet The walls are of firstclaes brick quite a large proportion pro-portion of which were made and burnt on the Tabernacle lot The foundation of tho difice is composed of the stone whkh overlays the vast coal beds of this region and it has been embedded in the earth to the depth of 11 feet below the level wrth a breadth of 16 feet BO that a splendid foundation has been secured cured The walls are two feet thick from foundation t3 roof and they have been materially strengthened strength-ened by numerous massive and ornamental abutments and columns col-umns The finishing stone used in the columns and watoriables is ot avery a-very fine quality strong handsome and very durable The interior height from floor to ceiling will be about thirtyeight feet and the design de-sign is such as would seem to warrant war-rant fine acoustic properties A large space has been reserved for a Qnepipe organ which in all probability prob-ability will be built by Salt Lake artiat The famous yellow pine of Camas enters largely into the interior finishing of the structure This jiimber has great superiority of over much of other grades in that it shrinks and swells but little after once being seasoned The brick is of a quality well calculated to stand the Action of water as there seems to be absolutely no lime in their composition Great care has been exercised in every department of the construction of the building so that it may be well and permanently perma-nently done and stand for many years In form it somewhat resembles re-sembles theAssembly Hall in this city but being of an entirely different differ-ent material the resemblance is of course not very striking Mr T L Allen of Coalville is the architect and builder and much credit is dae him for the handsome design and the effective manner of carrying it Into execution President Presi-dent W W Cluff bas a general oversight of the work and like everything else with which he has to do he has made it his business to see that it has been done well It was at one time intended to build an assembly ball on an imposing im-posing elevation in the heart of the city but the working of the old Spriggs coal mine so undermined tbe spot that the idea was abandoned All that this eminence now amounts to as far as the little city is concerned con-cerned Js a nuisance for it has no earthly value being as it is a slumbering slum-bering volcano of burning coal This famous old wreck bas been smould ering for some sixteen years Although a very large portion por-tion of the workings are flooded with water It ia entirely en-tirely valueless as a coal mine or at least it would EO appear for the vast extent of coal inthe near vicinity seems to make it advisable to let the Spriggs mine alone for ever There are many evidences of life I and activity In this pleasant little burg and it would seem chat nothing noth-ing fehould check its onward march for it appears td be blest with many advantages entirely forbidden to many less favored settlements of our Territory while its disadvantages are but nominal ia many respects The genial good nature of Bishop duff as everybody insists upon calling him Las evidently been an L important factor in the general happiness hap-piness and material progress of the place An intelligent following of such a man ensures success and that h < 3 has the capacities for an I able leader has been amply demonstrated demon-strated Some of the people eeem rather anxious to know what has become of the famous Black Diamond I Coal and Coke company which with its millionaire manipulators was about to revolutionize the fair face and black heart of the coal region re-gion of Summit County ITEM |
