delegates and the presence of the outside force which are expected to play a prominent prom-inent part in shaping the outco i e I of events About 400 delegates have I arrived on the ground and have been supplemented by an innumerable innumer-able host of flankers who are at present the most active factors in the preliminary battling It is concede con-cede thai no convention in the history of the party was composed of delegations more thoroughly unhampered in the way of pledges than the prese tone t-one all of which tends to lend sharp excitement to the early movements in the tight The hotels today began be-gan for the first time to feel the force of their crush and the corridors corri-dors of the leading ones were alive throughout the day with active workers A sensational feature of the day wai the arrival of the Cali fonia and Nevada delegations which made their way from the depot to their Intel 10 the scorn animent of martial muic to be heartily greeted by a lsrge waiting crowd on their advent in the Palmer loiee The New York independents cmprised of Geo Wm Curtis Gen Francis C Barlow Frederick C Halls David Allerton John A King Carl Sshurz Theodore Roosevelt Roose-velt James W Wads worth and Wharton Barker arrived en the through Pennsylvania limited at 10 30 Only a Dortion of their number num-ber are delegates They represent more roperly the Republican con erenca committee Attached to the same train was a car containing a number of Senators and Representatives Represen-tatives from the national Capital their car was attached at harrisburg harris-burg Among their number were Senators Hoar Platt Sawyer Blair JoneR Conger and Congressman Congress-man Horrand Anson McCook Indisnas advance guard consist of Senators Harrison Morris McDonald Mc-Donald and John H Baker delegates dele-gates at large also arrived early in the day It had been said that Senator Harrison would not attend the convention but would tend an alternate His presence was in itself a sufficient denial He said HI am here you see and I shall vote with the other Indiana men Regarding the mention of his name in connection with the Presidency the Senator said CLam not a candidate can-didate and never have been if I were I i should certainly not be here He would not state his reference re-ference Morris and McDonald said if opportunity offered the Indiana Indi-ana delegation would present the name of Harrition or Pre haur ExGovernor John D Long of Massachusetts arrived ahead of his delegation which is due tomorrow morning He declared that Mas a chuetta would undoubtedly give her entire vote for Edmunds The delegation of New York business busi-ness men who come in furtherance further-ance of the candidacy of President Arthur arrived in satisfactory condition headed by David Dows They numbered about 100 taking up their quarters at the Grand Pacific Pa-cific They were entertained during the afternoon by a large delegation of local business men who also or ganizsd in the Arthur interest The greater number of the Texas delegation delega-tion arrived None have been delayed de-layed en route by the big flood near Texarkana 1 resulting from the recent re-cent rains The State of Texas is divided between Arthur and Blaine Nearly all the Alabama delegates arrived during the forenoon and also a portion of Tennessee Georgia and Mississippi delegations The Nebraska delegation came in a body late in the afternoon Earnest but godnatured work was done during tbe day for the different candidates but only in the way of throwing out skirmishers and preparing lines for attack and defence One hears very little 0 anyone except Arthur and Blame occasionally sjmethin said and done for Logan the third conspicuous candidate is reported but delegates do not seem to attach importance to hia candidacy In this respec they may be mistaken there seems to be no doubt of a friendly alliance between Blaine and Lcgau Heaquarters of the supporters or these two are at the same hotel and friendly intercourse is kept ur Chicago 3h The following circumstance cir-cumstance was related this afternoon after-noon It being thought advisable to test this relationship in Washington Washing-ton one of the southern delegates was dispatched to call on Blaine He was well received and during the Interview remarked that he was friendly to Arthur but being doubt ful of biB success he wanted to sup po t a man who was likely to be successful Baine gave him a letter let-ter to Logan Upon delivery of this he remarked to Logan that it was possible to do something with thp southern delegates but there would be expense act en ding it and he was a poor man General Logan remarked re-marked that he wa > also pJor but he had friends who might aid in tbe matter Thereupon gave him a letter to Wm Walter Phelpsand the story goes that this friend invested 8200 in the southern venture The alliance is said to be offensive and defensive with a view to control not only the convention but the affairs of the government SHAKY OHAXCES Uhicago 31Arthur men are somewhat disturbed tonight over a report that the Arkansas delegation will go for Blaine Prominent supporters of Arthur say there Is a etory
