Show fe i: 2 EnoFGtliGOf s By DAVE WIGHAM To be competitive for the state title in track and field a" team must have two important impor-tant ingredients. First they need a superstar who can get you points consistently and second they need depth in all events. REGION Two's Clearfield Falcons have a track team that has both these ingredients. Opposing coaches are already pointing to the powerful Falcons as the team to beat in the region meet later in the season. The superstar who collects points on a regular basis is Clearfield's sprinter Robbie Richeson. In dual meets the Falcons are almost assured of first in the 100 and 220 yard dashes from Robbie. In the invitational meets, and the state meet, Robbie has the times to walk away with top honors. THE FALCONS have three excellent 440 yard men, there's the depth in Ron Peterson, Pe-terson, Jeff Trussel and Glen Simonsen. These three, along with Richeson, also form the mile relay squad for Clearfield. Clear-field. The Falcons are the defending state champs in" this event and three of the four runners are back from last year. Rodney Neville is a top point getter in the long jump, already this year he has a 21 foot leapjle is helped in this, event by Jerry Ecord. Pole vaulter Mark Smith has a 12 foot jump to his credit this season and teammate Bryce Hilton is right behind him. IN THEother field events the Falcons have some consistent con-sistent performers in javelin throwers Kevin Jamison and Scott Harting and in high jumpers Scott Wallace and Mark Reid. The discus is handled by Roger Bailey and Bryce Chapman while Bob Barera and Russ Terry are the shot putters for the Falcons. ASIDE FROM Richeson, the Clearfield squad has some other excellent sprinters in Ron Peterson, Rodney Trussel Trus-sel and Jeff Trussel. The hurdlers are Kris Altice and Chris Mikesell. If the Falcons have a weak-" ness it would be in the distance dis-tance races but they get good efforts from milers Rod Barder and Doug Jenkins and two milers Mike Sessions and Mark Wayment. RUNNING the 440 for the Clearfield is anothef star for the Clearfield team in Ron Peterson. His times this year put him right up among the top quarter milers in the state. Along with Ron is Jeff Trussel. In the 880 yard run the Falcons have Brent McBride and Kirk Read. With their speed and depth the Falcons are always tough in the relay events. If all goes well for them this season the Falcons should easily finish in the top five in state and have an excellent chance of winning it all. dw |
