Show Bountiful VJill Hoot Vioivmont For City Trc oh Championship By DAVE WIGHAM - Bountiful Higrftrack team will host Viewmont for the -City Championship next Wednesday, Wed-nesday, Apr. 20 under the lights at Bountiful High beginning at 6 p.m. n BOTH COACHES Mitch Willey and Bob Ashdown expect ex-pect the meet to be close and exciting with the relays being the deciding factor. Along with the title of city champion, the winning team will receive the traveling trophy and the top three finishers in each event will be awarded ribbons. The junior highs in the area were going to participate but will be unable to. THIS DUAL meet should be very close and interesting as both squads have strengths and weaknesses. The Braves are strong in the distance running and certain field events while the Vikes have depth and strength in the sprints and hurdles along with some field events. Highlight of the evening should be the 880 yard dash where Bountiful's Terry Elton and Viewmont's Dan Pope will lock horns. Elton has a 1:59.6 time to his credit this year, while Pope is right behind him with time of 2:00.2 Six-tenths of a second separatethese two runners. SO the finish should be really close. ANOTHER good matchup should come in the discus between Viewmont's Dave Pearce and Bountiful's Rich Denning. Denning has the best throw of the two so far with a 142 foot effort, Pearce has been improving and has a 135 foot mark. Mike Matheson and Kirby Bauer should fare well for the Vikes in the 100 and 220 but Bountiful's Mark Dickerson should push both of them and could possibly pull off an upset up-set and win it. VIEWMONT should win the hurdle events with Tim Eden having the best times in these events. Pearce should also be a heavy favorite in the shot put, his best throw of 49 feet is about six feet ahead of the nearest Brave toss. Bountiful should win the two miles with Steve Jenkins in a class of his own. Viking Kelly Gibb has been improving improv-ing in this event but is still about 15 seconds behind Jenkins' best effort. ALAN Christensen should walk away with the high jump for the Vikes as his 63" leap is considerably better than any Bountiful effort. Mark Dickerson should win top honors in the long jump if he marks up to this time hold up. Mark has a 20 foot leap to his credit. IF ALL goes as the coaches predict it will the relays, probably the last one of the night, will decide the winner of the meet. Viewmont might have too much depth for the Braves but Bountiful will be going after the trophy and the City Championship, dw |
