Show Congressman Dan Marriott (R-Utah) has opposed the embargo against chrome from white-ruled Rhodesia voted into law by Congress this week. IN THE congressman's words, "Internal disputes between Great Britain and Rhodesia should not hamper our export-import programs, especially when the product, in this case chrome, is so essential es-sential to our national defense." "If Rhodesian chrome is to be embargoed for alleged human rights violations," Marriott continued, "it is only fair to place the same restriction re-striction on chrome from all countries who violate human rights, including the Soviet Union. "WHY SHOULD we be the only country in the world to comply with the U.N. sanction when other countries secretly violate it, then sell us the chrome for a higher price? "That leaves us vulnerable to staggering price increases from countries with whom we have strained relations, and couid cause additional unemployment in this country. "RUSSIA raised her price for chrome 188 per cent in recent years, while Mozambique Mozam-bique imposed a 250 per cent hike. No one can assure us it will not be used against us. "This kind of legislation is not a positive step toward a meaningful foreign policy, and is highly inconsistent and . discriminatory," Marriott said. |
