He had been there five years and slowly rebuilt the team-but then many others had been in on that effort too. HOW MUCH Houlk really accomplished at Detroit is questionable. That he was a gentleman, the kind of man most parents would want to manage their sons is certain. That the Tigers are an interesting team today, perhaps a contender, is apparent. ap-parent. But Houk wasn't beating the strong teams. New York, Boston and Baltimore won the big game from Detroit, even this year, when the chips were down. A young, contending con-tending team usually has the ability to upset the league leaders, which they get up for. |
