Show lc:3lVialnSoyQtefc:3 By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL - When the Clearfield Falcons take the field this Friday to battle the Viewmont Vikings both clubs will be trying to get back onto the winning path after dropping drop-ping a pair of contests in the past two weeks. IN FACT both these teams lost a game they weren't supposed sup-posed to with the Vikings losing los-ing to Sky View 7-0 while the Falcons lost to Weber 6-0. In both these games the two were favored to win but their offenses ran into problems. During that time-span they both lost to Bountiful but in different fashions, Clearfield was totally dominated by the Braves in their 41-8 loss while the Vikings put up a great fight before dropping a .14-7 contest. ALL THIS boils down to one thing, if either of these clubs has any shot at a post season berth this game is a must-win situation for them. A loss would give them four in league play and would rule them out of any chance at a state berth. These two clubs are almost identical in personnel in key positions. Both have good scrambling quarterbacks. Ryan Sanford of Viewmont and Larry Read of Clearfield both enjoy running the football foot-ball and add that threat to the offense. BOTH HAVE tall rangy tight ends that also play defensive ends with the Falcons Fal-cons boasting Rodger Vincent and the Vikings countering with Doug Day. Vincent is probably the better of the two on offense while Day is the better defensive player. Then too both have good defensive backs in Steve Beal and Jim Miller. Beal is an excellent ballplayer who makes a lot of tackles while Miller has made a name for himself as a pass defender, last week he picked off three passes against Bountiful. IT LOOKS like on paper these two clubs could play forever and still end up in a tie. One thing to remember though is that last season the Falcons beat the Vikings rather easily and the Vikes are out for a little revenge. In fact some of the players and coaches listed the Clearfield team right up there with Bountiful in teams they would love to beat. Runningwise both clubs have hardnosed backs who have good speed and power, Viewmont goes mainly with Larry Fry and Brian Skid-more Skid-more while the Falcons look to Mike Arrant and Doug Hamblin. Arrant is the better known of the four but Fry has been playing extremely well lately. THEN TOO remember both quarterbacks like to run, Sanford is a better runner but Read throws the ball a little better. Defensively it could come down to the Linebackers and in this department the Vikings have a dandy in Craig Corry. Corry played a tremendous game against Bountiful last week and will need another effort again this week against the Falcons. Scott Bond is the key to the Clearfield defense. THESE CLUBS have given the top clubs, like Layton, Bountiful and the likes a good game but when they play the not-so-strong clubs, like Sky View and Weber, they seem to have trouble. With so much riding on this game the clubs will have no trouble getting ready. The winner still has a shot at a berth, but the loser can forget it. THE GAME is at Viewmont which gives them a slight edge, for the Vikes to win -they'll have to stop the running run-ning attack of Hamblin and Arrant, if they don't it'll be another long afternoon. Clearfield is fighting mad after losing to Weber, they want another win to stay alive. Then remember too the Viewmont team has a score to settle from last year. |
