Show February 2 Is Day Of Groundhogs February 2 is known as Candlemas in Roman, Greek and Episcopal churches, and in others, and relates to the legendary visit of Mary to the temple in Jerusalem, for so-called so-called purification. THIS IS said to have occurred oc-curred forty days after the birth of Jesus, according to the second chapter of Luke. It, to some, has in the past been a day when candles lit in the church become blessed and afford protection from harm in their homes thereafter. February 2 is also Groundhog Day in America a custom which came from England and Germany. The theory is that if the groundhog (or woodchuck) comes out of his winter quarters on this day and sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. A CHECK on the accuracy of this forecast, however, shows the groundhog is often wrong. Actually, except for the extreme ex-treme southerly states, winter seldom disappears anywhere as early as Feb. 2, shadow or no shadow. |
