Show 4 Thursday, Dec. THE GREEN SHEET 1, 1988 FROM PAGE ONE Utah School Enrollments Are Expected To Peak Around 1992 SALT LAKE. Enrollment in Utah public schools should peak in 1992 or 1993 and then begin a slow decline for several years. That is the projection of the Utah Foundation, a private research after organization, school enrollment analyzing figures released by the Utah State Office of Education. The prospect of a leveling off in overall school enrollment should ease some of the financial pressure which has plagued Utah education during recent years. Changes in Utahs population growth pattern during the past few years may have slowed the population growth, but in spite of that slow down, continued growth in numbers of school age children is still anticipated to occur for the next five years as the school system "catches up with area births. This slowdown in Utahs population growth may be caused a combination of outby migration, as a result of economic conditions, as well as a decline in natural increase. Growth patterns here seem to indicate families are getting smaller. The Utah Foundation analysis seems to agree with assessments made local district by readministrators. Statistics leased Nov. 8 by Jordan District indicate continued growth during the next decade, with about 6,000 additional students expected during the next five years. This figure, though, is only about half that anticipated by district planners only two years ago. Total enrollment in Jordan is expected to be about 68,000 by 1993-94- . Between 1994 and 1999, Jordan enrollment is expected to grow by another 4,300 students, raising the district total to 72,000 students by the turn of the century. Similar statistics released by Granite District Nov. 15 show the district growing by 1,658 students e this year to an high of 75,936. That number, however, also fell short of the amount projected to be in Granite schools only two years ago. In previous years, Granite could expect about 2,000 new students each year. While Granites enrollment is also expected to continue to grow, it will also do so at a slower pace than had earlier been predicted, district officials say. Between 1977 and 1987, public school enrollment throughout Utah rose by 33.5 while they were declining by 8.2 in the nation as a whole, the Utah Foundation report indicates. Even though school outlays to support education has been rising much faster in Utah than throughout the nation over the past ten years (159 compared with 123), Utah lost ground among the states in the amount expended per school child. According to the Foundation analysis, kindergarten enrollment in Utah have been declining since 1985 and elementary grade enrollment (grades probably peaked this year. The projections indicate that middle grade enrollment (grades will continue to grow until 1993 and high school grade enrollment (grades 10-1will not decline until sometime after 1996. In other words, the enrollment load is shifting away from the elementary grades to the middle school and high school grades. Most of the increase in school enrollment in Utah continues to be concentrated in the suburban districts along the Wasatch Front and in Washington County.
