'II 1 T Executive Council commended Editor: I continaully pick up the ' SienDost and find out why Student Government and the Student Body are the way they are. Karma Grimm, "Captain" Kyle Mattson and the rest of the Executive Council keep popping through the paper. It seems most students (including the Editor & staff of the Signpost) have to take out their frustrations, or lack of understanding, on them. What does Student Government entail? I doubt that any student on this campus can answer that question. With all the complex array of committees, rules and Problems within student system This is the first in a series of anonymous letters written by someone close to the workings of our student system. It is anonymous because the party would be unable to offer the criticism he deems as constructive with his name attached. Responses in any form are of course welcome and will be printed, provided they meet the standards of Signpost policy as set out in previous issues. The Editor Editor: For the past years I have been observing the attitudes of our student government leaders, their actions and the final consequences of each. I have seen court battles, election frauds, legislative intimidation, and, in general, total incompetence. With such rampant ineptness inherent in the system, I feel that no logical alternatives have yet been offered. In this anthology it is my intention to remedy this dispicable situation by suggesting not only novel, but hopefully rational solutions to the present predicament in which I feel myself entrapped. Perhaps it would be best to start with the most obvious and revolting aspect of the present government structure. You may ask what this is. To those of us fortunate enough to have escaped the realm of WSC's student government, the answer is as obvious as predicting our Executive Council will vote unanimously or that the Signpost will automatically oppose those same decisions. Those of you who are within the scope of student government might still be guessing what I am talking about. The answer lies in the constant harassment and the forms, only seven people could come close (our Executive Council). I've worked actively in Student Government for four years. And I guess, according to Ed Moffit, that makes me a "yo-yo'." But I find that the handful of students that run this campus all have just one thing in mind. They believe that this college has the greatest students of anywhere. And they care about thefunds, activities, services, publicities, 'education and feelings of those students. I just wonder how many people could accomplish what Kyle has in his short year as president. I sibling bickering which accompanies any move made by anyone involved in anything dealing with ASWSC. i Throughout the year any attempt at progress of any has been thwarted by abusive threats, mindless insinuations and personal vendettas. Perhaps the best example would be to merely list the cases coming before the student Supreme Court this year. The cases heard by the court include the Ombudsman vs. the Elections Committee, Ombudsman vs. the Executive Council, and a complaint filed against the Associated Women Students. Understandably these cases are reflective of deeper, more subtle deficiencies, not only in the system, but also in the very personalities of those responsible. To those with a morbid sense of tragedy this situation might appear hopeless--but the answer is quite simple. The pragmatic solution would be to abolish our student government. To imagine students electing themselves to rule their own kingdom is both archaic and idealistic. The consequence of such freedom is the ordination of those who would imagine themselves as kings and queens but who in reality are simple self-serving court jesters. - Just as a king is powerless without his crown and staff, so is Mary' Woodhead without her First Amendment, Kyle Mattson . without his Robert's Rules of Order, Jon Vanderwood without his emotional interpretation of WSC law and Bill Bommer without his legalistic UEQjJ (33133-10 wonder, also, if anyone would stand up to the snide and tacky remarks, as he has. It's about time that people started putting some facts behind their words. Pushing the administration doesn't accomplish anything. In fact, as in Rex Frasier's case, it only gets your name in the paper. I think that if the students on this campus are men and women, instead of little kids, they'll start actively supporting their Student Government. And I don't mean just with words. Barbara Joseph propaganda. The list continues with honorable mentions going to Wendy West and her Signpost affiliation, Doug Young and his faculty evaluation and Dave Rich and his purple sweater. The only logical and realistic way to topple the kingdom and the royal inhabitants is for the peasants to revolt against such power-hungry incompetents. By banishing these rulers and repealing the established laws, the students will be freed from the chains of the tortuous Weber State Constitution. No longer should our students be manacled to such an obsolete document. This problem although foremost is definately not the only one. Others include nepotism, economics, academia, representation, power distribution and apathy. Each of these ideas will be examined further in an effort to raise student awareness.
