Show August 1. 2000 IttFJGR IS Ml of variety By Mark Cray news editor The Signpost KWCR, Weber State University's radio station, may be the only radio station in Utah where you'll hear Pink in between Limp Bizkit and Macy Gray. The bottom line is, KWCR is full of variety. And that's exactly what. KWCR's general manager Drew Tyler wants out of the station known as The Edge. "We do some wild things; things out of the norm," he said. Tyler, unlike many other local stations, is willing to spin a CD of a local band, a lesser-known independent band and a high profile top 40 band all in the same music set. He is hoping this will shape a "new image" of 88. 1 'The Edge." "We have a reputation of oeing a station that will kill the top songs. We're trying to change that," Tyler said. "We're trying to go from a little kids station to more of a station for college kids." He plans on doing this with his staff. A staff that he hopes will go somewhere in the radio industry. "We don't want DJs just screwing around; Dedicated DJs," Tyler said before playing a set that included Lil' Kim, Sunny Day Real Estate and Straight Faced. DJs are quick to warn you that you can't just walk in and become the next Howard Stern. "It's got to be a passionate thing," said Brittanie Musselman, KWCR music director. The DJs appear to be committed to the station considering they are all students. In fact, everybody involved in the station, other than the adviser, is a student. This could be one reason why the station is so successful. KWCR has 20,000 listeners at any given time. Recent survey's have shown that, as far a WSU students go. The Edge ranks as the fourth or fifth most listened to station. Radio personality Smokey Wilson, also known as Jeff Pfister, plays requested music Mondays and Tuesdays 9:30 a.m. until noon, on WSU's KWCR. The most popular times don't differ from bigger radio stations. Drive time (2 p.m.- 5 p.m.) and mornings bring in the highest number of listeners. And, of course, a few of the most requested songs don't differ from the "big boy" stations either. Requests for rapmetal artists Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit and rapper Eminem frequently flood the phone lines. "We get a lot of calls for angst music," Tyler said. The anger of the music doesn't flood into the DJ booth, however. The KWCR team is united. "It's like a second family," said Musselman, who spins industrial and techno music while she's on the air. The format of the station is similar to that of other stations. They make their own advertisements, sell air time to sponsors, have a full staff of DJs and more. "We do everything that a real station does," Tyler said. They don't want to be too much like other stations, though. They want to separate themselves and become "an Ogden icon" according to Tyler. "We want to become the edge of music," Tyler said. "We want to get music and play it before the other stations do." Tyler begins to smirk when he thinks about the future of the station. "We're not going to be your little sister's radio station anymore." ; mj u-mm My mihim j " ji iUii.u.. A if- if -; ilk ,'-'-" I .
