Show me oiaiiDos August 1. 2000 Orientation Issue ' S8H!8 Bilti'f$MGt: campus police By Tanna Barry managing editor The Signpost It isn't the place that most students would hope to find themselves, at least if they've done something wrong, but Weber State University Police Department offers more than many students think. Their vision is "to be a premier law enforcement agency by providing professional and responsible services," according to their web page. Police officers patrol 526 acres of campus which includes the four on-campus dormitories. They do this 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. The department consists of nine full-time officers and approximately 35 part-time officers. The officers go through the same training and have the same certification as officers employed by city police departments, county sheriffs offices or the highway patrol."Our officers are 'real' police officers, they aren't security," said Taylor Fielding, a WSPD dispatcher. "We are veryservice-oriented, but we also enforce the law and deal with crime just like any other police department." The police department is served by their own dispatch center-which is staffed by one full-time and two part-time dispatchers. After the normal business hours of 7 p.m. to 5 p.m., calls are routed to the Weber County Public Safety Dispatch Center. WSU officers still respond to the calls, however. While the department does enforce speeding laws and handle other crimes, they also provide many services to WSU faculty, ,"? V.,.;.' WSPD is one of the few police stations that handle "motorist assists," according to their web page. The officers will unlock vehicles when they've locked their keys in the car and will jumpstart their vehicles. "Many other police departments are so busy with other calls, they don't have time for calls like motorist assists," Fielding said. Officers also respond to medical calls on campus. They provide first aid until medical units arrive on the scene. "We have a feature in our dispatch center that alerts us every time a 9 1 1 call is made from a campus phone," Fielding said. "This allows us to send officers to the location where the call originated to determine what the problem is and administer aid." The department also has 13 "blue-light emergency phones" located at various locations around campus and at the Dee Events Center. A map of these locations is available online as well as in a brochure produced by the department. "One touch of the button and the phone dials dispatch," Fielding said. These phones are for emergency use only. Students can access other services such as their nighttime escort service by using a regular or campus phone. This service is less known to the students, but is often very useful, Fielding said. Officers are able to provide students, faculty and staff with a ride to their car after dark.
