Show CHARLES W. PENROSE DEAD Charles William Penrose of the first presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints passed peacefully away at his home in Salt Lake City last Saturday night. Surviving him are two widows, wid-ows, twelve children, ninety-four grandchildren, 123 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. President Penrose was 93 years old. on February 4 of this year. C. W. Penrose was born at Cam-berwell, Cam-berwell, London, England, Feb. 4, 1S32. He joined the L. D. S. church in London, May 14, 1S50. He emigrated emi-grated to this country in 1861. He had been counselor in the first presidency presi-dency of the Church 14 years, and an active worker and leader in the Church for 75 years. He edited the Deseret News many years, also the Salt Lake Herald and Ogden Junction. Junc-tion. He was a vigorous, forceful and. at times, a peppery writer. He was one of Utah's great men and a strong pillar of the Church. His life l. I .. l : j i nas been a very active one and he retires re-tires from it full of glory for good work done. He will always be remembered re-membered for the beautiful hymns he composed, among them "O, Ye Mountains High," "God of Our Fathers" Fath-ers" and "School Thy Feelings." |
