Show TEMPLE AND TftBERNft(J Klilcr Philip Haycock, president of tho Turkish mission, has been released to return homo during the summer. On April 31st the first missionaries for the Cook Archipelago left Papeete, Society Islands, and four days later others left that same port for the Mar-quisas Mar-quisas group. Architect Kletting of Salt Lake is preparing plans for a tabernacle at Keverton. It will be about fifty-eight feet square, and eighty feet to the top of the dome, situated in the center of the edifice. The following annual stake Sunday school conferences will take place during June: Utah (at Provo) June 10 and 11; Wasatch, 17th and 18th; Oneida, Onei-da, ISth and 19th; Bear Lake and Millard, Mil-lard, 24th and 25th. President Snow addressed the St. George Sunday school on the 18th and shook hands with 835 children and kissed the smaller tots who came forward for-ward to grasp the hand of their beloved be-loved president. It was a scene never to be forgotten, and his kind, fatherly advice to the little ones was filled with wisdom. The greater portion of the general authorities of the church are now absent ab-sent from home. Presidents Snow, Smith and Richards, with Apostles Lyman and Woodruff, President Seymour Sey-mour B. Young and Bislfop Preston are visiting the saints in southern Utah; Apostles Smith and Cowley are in the southern states; President Geo. Q. Cannon is in Washington, D. C; Apostle Grant is on his way east, and and others are absent on missionary work. Late advices from Samoa state that during the late troubles the mission headquarters at Fagalii was looted March 25 and property to the amount of 81,200 belonging to the church and to the missionaries was destroyed by the native warriors. No personal injury in-jury had been suffered by any of the missionary brethren and sisters, though some of them had passed through critical experiences. The missionaries mis-sionaries on the island of Upolu were being concentrated at Apia. The special conference of the St. George stake, called in honor of the visit of the first presidency and part of the quorum of twelve, met on the 17th inst., with the whole of the party feeling feel-ing in excellent spirits. President Snow was the first speaker. His remarks re-marks were mainly eulogistic of the people of St. George and vicinity on their tithes and offerings, giving them the name of being the best tithe-payers and most faithful stake in the Church of Christ. He spoke of the colonization coloniza-tion of that country, and the difficul- ties successfully overcome in making' the country what it is at present. He said Jackson county, Mo., the center stake of Zion, should be colonized sooner than we expected, and urged the people to prepare themselves for the glorious day to come. At the Salt Lake Tabernacle Sunday, May 21, there was an unusually large attendance. Dr. James E. Talmage was the only speaker. He said that it was a great thing to know that this is the kingdom of God, but he expressed the belief that a testimony would not save any man. People cannot be saved in ignorance, but intelligence alone is not saving. "Knowledge, just as faith, may be dead," the speaker went on. "Faith is vivified belief, but faith alone will not save. Acceptance of the saving works of Jesus Christ is necessary to salvation." salva-tion." Dr. Talmage referred to numerous nu-merous instances in the New Testament Testa-ment where people knew beyond a doubt that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and yet were not saved. He quoted the apostle's words that even the devils believed, and compared their dead, unvlvified faith to the living faith of Peter, who said: "Thou art Christ." "This is a day of trials, of temptations, tempta-tions, and of many churches," continued contin-ued Dr. Talmage. "It is the day the prophet referred to when the people should cry, 'Lol here is Christ, and lol there is Christ.' and it is necessary that the people should put their faith in God. Signs are to follow the believers, be-lievers, but signs are not always a true indication that miracles are per- formed by the power of God. Other powers sometimes perform miracles. Men have been healed by other powers than those of God. Testimonies founded on miracles are like a house built on sand they will fall. The time will come when the fall of man will not be considered a great curse. The fall carried with it a great power man's free agency. Man has absolute power to decide bet ween good or evil for himself. him-self. None can be forced into sin, nor can any be forced to accept works of righteousness." Mr. Talmage spoke of man's nature, saying that he is not wholly evil. He also dealt with the law of heredity, and closed with the assertion that a man who could overcome hereditary impulses im-pulses would be entitled to a great reward. re-ward.
