copies of a paper published in 1833 by the coeny of cormons mormons then located at ce in that year the cormons mormons v in en from independence and iii sie riot incident of the expulsion the ice of their paper was suited and the press and material were destroyed it is alleged by the latter day saints now at independence that the real cause of tho uprising of the people was disc to the article which appeared in their paper the morning and evening hiir this paper was u church organ and devoted to the up building of the mormon faith the paper was issued montah and only fourteen editions were ever published as before its month rolled around the press was a wreck and the material gone it waa claimed that polygamy was practiced and that was the cause of the act ot lawlessness all the cormons mormons were driven from independence with few e options fourteen copies of this paper were secured by a mormon elder named peter whitmer a brother of davia whitmer who died lately at richmond mo whom the lurch claims was one af the witnesses to the truth of the book of mormon and saw the plates of gold found under the rock upon I 1 which were the characters or eions afterward translated trin slated by joseph smith the prophet by the ai d of the arim and Thum mim alie papers were taken to far west mo and buried lor upwards of forty years in a cellar they were afterwards riua up and finally fell into the fiands 01 dr win E mcclelland who also buried them dr mcclelland died about five years ago and just previous to his deatle told his wife of the value of the papers to tho mor ann church and where they were hid den the papers were dug up from the cellar where they had been hidden and were lound to be firmly wrapped in tarred paper and but slightly damaged but with age these interesting and important copies were turned over to clarence st glair a prominent member of the latter day saints church i t independence mr st glair showed the quaint bundle to a journal reporter at independence yesterday he eaid 1 know it is the general opinion that the cormons mormons were driven out of independence pen dence for inclination but thi is not the fact as these papers of the church which have been hidden for so many 5 airs contain no account ol 01 polygamy being here hjal cause was an article published in tho caper entitled free men of clor these papers also contain the cevela being driven away from zion THE PEOPLE OF colon to prevent any misunderstanding among the churches abroad respecting iree of color alio may of coming to tho western boundaries ol 01 missouri as members of the church we quote the following clauses from the laws i missouri yec tun 4 be it further enacted that hereafter no frac negro or mulatto other than a citizen of some one of the united states shall come into or settle lu this sute under any whatever and upon complaint made to any justice ut the peace anat such person is in contrary to the in of this cause person brocht bron ht before him anaf upon egami nat a it appear eliat such person io a free nero or mulatto and that he bath come into this state after the passage af act and such person shall sot produce a certificate attested by tue al of some court ot record in some oni of alie united states evidencing that hb is a citizen of such state the justice ahall command him forthwith to depart in m this state and in case such negro or mulatto shall not depart from the state girhin thirty days after being coin banded so to do as aforesaid any justice of the peace upon complaint thereof IO 10 him made may cause such to b brought before him and may him to the common jail of the county in he may be found until the next term of the circuit court to be holden in such county and the said court shall cause such person to be brought before it aad cause commitment mit ment and if it shall appear perron came into the state contrary t he provisions of chis act and continue therein after being commanded to depart as aforesaid such court may sentence such person 10 receive ten lashes on his or her bare back and order him to depart alie state and if he or shy ahall not so depart the same proceeding gh allbe aa control or interfere the of conscience that no person can ever be molested or his lious profession or sentiments if he does bot disturb others in their religious wor ship that no person on account of his religious opinions can be rendered in eligible eli gable to any office of trust or profit under this state that no preference can ever be given by law to any sect or mode ef worship and eliat no
