Show Time of transition The sudden death of President Joseph Fielding Smith leaves the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confronting the problem of transition very directly. President Smith was a man i with his first foot in the pioneer i stage and his last foot in a ! technetronic cornucopia. As , such he gave a continuity to the Mormon church that was invaluable. in-valuable. Although his successor will undoubtedly be a man of comparable statue, he will stand i with both feet in our age. He will be responsible for answering an-swering unprecedented social challenges. If he and the church back away, then that institution will have relegated itself to a secondary role in modern life. While the Daily Utah Chronicle joins the family of President Smith and church members in mourning his passing, we wish the best of luck and wisdom to the Council of Twelve and the new president they select. |
