Home court: From RIVALRY • 12 points with the result of a 12-7 advantage early on. But the Lions roared back with several treys to snag the lead at 17-16 at the end of the first frame. This game had the intensity of a region show- down. Payson went up by three but junior Rhen Williamsen tied it at 21 all with a shot from downtown. The Lions grabbed the lead again with a three pointer but SF answered right back for yet another lead change. With one minute left until half, the Don defense continued to give fits to the men in green. After junior Gavin Hales converted two freebies, teammate Taylor Jones grabbed yet another steal on the ensuing inbound play before tossing it to Hales for a crowd pleasing trey. B ailey *s game plan was working to perfection due to the hustle of each player. Spanish controlled the tempo and held onto the ball while their counterpart gave up a dozen turnovers which were created by great teamwork that gave the Dons a 36-28 lead at intermission. The Lions began to improve with sharp passes to break the Dons press and used their big men, down low for some easy buckets. Coach Bailey called timeout at the two minute mark after Payson had knotted the score at 46 all. Spanish went up by one with a trey by Adam Duke but the Lions returned the favor and took a 53-50 advantage to end the third. The Dons defense was led by Jones and Travis Still who both created havoc for the opposition with steals and big hustle plays. Spanish took advantage again with its press. They went on a 7-0 run that was capped off by a long ball from Jones to go up 5753. Moments later, Payson tied it back up with a two handed jam but SF finished strong with some crucial free throws down the stretch to seal the deal. The Lions crept within three on several occasions but the Dons remained poised and delivered a big win. Four Dons were in double figure. Lewis and Still both led the way with 16. Williamsen followed with 14 and Loftin pitched in 13 while Hales finished with nine. Jones contributed with five steals and as many rebounds and assists. "I liked our guys' effort," said Bailey. "We played real hard and together as a team." SOCCER STAR: Courtney Acosta from Spanish Fork Junior High School has been named an Honorable Mention for the 2008 All-Valley Girls Soccer Team!
