Show ' •/ SPANISH FORK Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3, 2009 - A 3 Benjamin Days coming June 11 'Round and About Benjamin Kathleen Olsen The Benjamin Cemetery looked especially lovely this Memorial Day. Everything was freshly washed from the storms the night before which cleared the air and rinsed the headstones making everything look especially pristine. It's always sobering to be there and observe the patriotic service that occurs there each year with the various flags fluttering in the little breeze that blows over the hill on most days. Thanks is expressed to those who provided the impressive ceremonies this year. ••• Some of the old names are still here and have been joined by newer ones as others have moved into our town. All continue to gather together to mark June. 12, as the beginning of Benjamin Ward. There are two Benjamin wards here now but we still mark our origins every June around June 12 as a day when the whole town joins together again and we renew old friendships or forge new ones. This year, bur celebration will take place on Thursday, June 11, 2009, to which everyone in Benjamin is invited in addition to family members and friends who now live elsewhere. Because we are hoping to see and meet old friends and make news ones, the theme is 'Our Town' since it is for everyone. The event will take place at the Benjamin Park (weather permitting) at 6 p.m. with a flag raising ceremony under the direction of Troop 98. Steve Stone will deliver the patriotic address followed by a children's parade around the park (this is for Primary age children.) Supper will be served for $2 per plate (children 5 and under free). A program featuring local talent will be presented, climaxed by the naming of Benjamin's 2009 Citizen of the Year. There will also be games for those who desire to play and a bake/craft sale. Citizens are asked to help out with this by donating homemade goodies and crafts. Benjamin Days is fast approaching on Thursday, June 11, 2009. There are some folks who wonder just what Benjamin Days (formerly Homecoming) is all about and why it is so adamant that it is held about the same time every year so here is the reason: In the late 1850s, people with cattle or sheep started moving into what is now Benjamin for the good grazing. In 1862, the Stewart brothers, Andrew Jackson and Benjamin Franklin, started laying out the town. They decided to name the new community, Benjamin; thus fulfilling a prophecy given several years earlier to Benjamin stating a community would be named for him. People still had close ties with Payson and traveled There are many people there to shop and attend from all sides of town who the LDS church. The upcoming Spanish Fork/Salem Junior Miss Scholarship Program will be held at the Ragan Theater at Utah Valley University on June 17, 2009, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Spanish Fork City Parks Department would like to thank all those who decorated the cemetery with flowers for Memorial Day. It is always a beautiful sight. Because it is impossible to cut the grass with all the flowers in place, on Monday, June 8 the cemetery crews will dispose of all remaining flowers and memorabilia not removed from the grass. Children were fascinated with all the decorations and loved the flowers and flags. And speaking of flags, the large north area where all the flags were displayed for each soldier who served in the military and in all wars, 'was filled with families looking for that special soldier. I thank all those who helped and participated in any way to make it a fitting and touching display.
