Cedar City LDS Institute Men, mascot jobs open on cheerleading squad by Laura Wearing When it comes to school athletics few things are more important than school spirit, and when it comes to school spirit nothing is more important than the cheerleaders. This year the cheerleaders are making some big changes. They are currently looking for a school mascot to help with student body involvement, to get the crowd to have more spirit and feel like theyre part of the game. The cheerleaders goal is to become the link between the student body and the athletes, to get the student body to be a part of the game and feel like an important asset to the games, says Gay Thurston, the new cheerleader adviser. Thurston replaced Kathryn Berg as adviser to the group on Aug. 10. She is originally from Green River, Utah, and has lived in Cedar City for 16 years. She now owns T.N.T. Dance Factory and feels that her interest in dancing is what encouraged her to become the adviser. I find it exciting and challenging, and feel the squad can become professional in the near future, she says. The cheerleading squad is made up of six girls: Kay Love, Randi Nielson, Barbara Smith, Shelly Leavitt, Stephanie Walker and JoAnn Mac Farlane. They are looking for male yell leaders and a school mascot to help them with promoting school enthusiasm. Those interested in becoming a member of the squad must C shixtO turn in an application by Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the student government offices or the physical education office.
