Show Sports SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 6, 1996 Fredonia football season Lady Buffs take second place ends at St. David By Kent Mason defense. Justin Mackelprang carried the ball 20 times for 145 yards while getting seven tackles on defense. Evan Sadlier carried it 17 times for 87 yards. Jared Black was a force on defense, making 13 tackles while making nine catches for 144 yards on offense. Jonathan Nosh had 10 tackles in the losing cause. For most of the game the score was close enough that either team could have won, but St. David came on strong to win, and in the process ended the season for the Lynx football Fredonia's football season came to an end in a 50-3- 4 loss to St. David. The fortunes of the 1996 Fredonia football season has been up and down like a yo yo, but in the loss to St. David last Friday night Coach Mont Griffiths said they played a good game but were simply beaten by a better team. This is one game we lost in which we did not beat ourselves, Mont commented. Nate Black went 17 for 29 in passing for a total of 227 yards, while picking up ten tackles on team. Fredonia 7th football By DeDe Sorensen The Lady Buffs of Valley High traveled to the Region 8th grade semi-fina- against the ls Escalante Moquis. Again the Buffs came out on top, which placed them in the championship game against the Wayne Badgers. Both teams battled hard but unfortunately the Wayne team won the first second game. A hard-fouggame saw the Buffs pulling to within five points but the Badgers triumphed. As it turned out, that was all the scoring Kanab needed as the game ended with the same score. In the two games between these teams this year, they must have set some kind of record for futility on offense. When they met earlier in the year in Kanab, Fredonia came out on top by a 2 score. In the two games, Fredonia scored six points, while After playing and beating the Hurricane Blue team in Hurricane last Wednesday night 16-1the Fredonia team faced Kanab in Fredonia on Saturday. It was a cold and windy day with strong overhanging clouds. The passing game simply was not working for either team, so both teams relied almost entirely on their ground game. When the first half ended with a nothing to nothing score, I felt that just one good play would decide the game but neither team came up with that one big play. About midway through the second half, Fredonia was forced Kanab managed just four. In to punt from deep in their own games won, they are even at one territory. The snap went sailing each. 4, d, and place. The Buffs did a great job and are looking forward to the state tournament, which will be held in Cedar City.
