Show ChlirctlCS dbune flje gait fake r, Even before the conference Advent, that special time of year set aside for Christians to prepare for Christmas, begins Sunday. Many area churches will hold services built around the preparation theme and the first of four Advent candles will be lit. Advent had its beginnings in the church in Gaul in about 4t0 when Bishop Perpetuus of Tours proclaimed a fast should be held from the Feast of St. Martin (Nov. 11) until Christmas. be- the bishops, sometimes with anger concerning women in the church. Concerning the roles of the Women Religious orders (sisters) today. Bishop Weigand said the bishops had received word from Pope John Paul II, telling the bishops they should "spearhead an effort to affirm the sisters in their vocations and to encourage more women to join a religious order. Bishop Weigand attended the conference which included discussions of women in the church, an update on the pastoral letter on the arms race and a major document on Hispanic members of the church. The bishops also determined to work together in an atmosphere of collegiality, seeing the need today, more than ever to get to know one another. four-da- y Lack Recognition The bishops discussed the role of Hispanics in the church called, Hispanic Presence: Challenge and Commitment. Bishop Weigand said the bishops belie' e the large Hispanic population of the church have not had enough recognition within the church and in society. He said the bishops believe the church has an obligation to minister better to Hispanic members, to be more sensitive to their needs and to conduct more services in Spanish. Bishop Weigand explained the bishops believe they should go to bat for the churchs Hispanic population, many of whom live below the poverty level. Others, such as migrants are being housed in inhuman, ways and are facing injustices. Reassures Hispanics As bishops we did a little breast beating, Bishop Weigand said, explaining the intent of a pastoral letter produced during the conference was to ask forgiveness of the church's Hispanic members and to reassure them, were with you. Concerning the role of women within the Catholic Church, Bishop Weigand said he does not see women being admitted to the priesthood, as the teachings and traditions of the church are viewed today. However, that doesnt mean the church is not for equal rights for women, Bishop Weigand emphasized, pointing out the church sees the complexity of the issue. We haven't reduced it to black and we oppose any form of white discrimination. the bishop said. At the conference the American bishops committed themselves to writing a major document on the role of women in society and in the church. That document may take three or four years to produce because "we want to clarify the issues for ourselves, Bishop Weigand said. He said the church doesn't want to backtrack on womens issues. Instead. the bishops believe women should be called into more leadership roles within parishes. "The ordination of women does not solve women's problems, Bishop Weigand said. ... Things Have Changed Bishop Weigand said before the Vatican Council II was held 20 years ago, the religious orders were directly under the pope. However, since Vatican II that has changed. The orders have done a great job of adapting their rules and regulations to the needs of the 20th century, but since the second Vatican Council the bishops have not helped nearly as much as we could have, Bishop Weigand admitted. The bishops also updated the pastoral letter on the arms race which was originally released in May. They discussed the possibility of critiquing government decisions on the arms race, although no consensus came on that issue. Bishop Weigand said the bishops were pleased with the reception the letter received from other churches and civic leaders. He said the letter examined the arms race from a moral and religious standpoint, not a political standpoint and added positive input to the debate. Bishop Weigand believes the people in America recognize the seriousness of the arms race and want it brought to a halt. Although the government is lagging behind the people, it too will come to the conclusion the arms race must be stopped. Bishop Weigand believes. The bishops also decided not to take a stand on Grenada, since they didn't feel there were enough facts available while the conference was in session to take a stand. However, the bishops did release a statement on Central America which reflects an earlier statement, challenging the governments there to come to a negotiated resolution and supporting the bishops in Central America. dates. At that time there were no Masses especially for Advent, instead the Church in Gaul used the Masses of Lent. The church in Rome did not mark Advent until the sixth century with no established fast except during the third week of December which was known as Ember Week. In the early church. Advent was a preparation period for the Feast of the Lord's Nativity and lacked penitential character. However, in the eighth century, Anniversary 30-Ye- ar Dave Adamson and Kitty Getz decorate Advent wreath for Community of Christ Presbyterian Church. Attfitfc tljp (Ulntrrh of luntr (Eluiirr Decision! the Frankish church accepted the Romar, liturgy and the tial Advent of Rome clashed with the Gallic Advent. After a few centuries there emerged a structure which combined features of both traditions. Advent means coming and was originally applied to Christmas only. After the sixth century various ministers expanded the meaning to include the whole preparatory season and in the 12th century it came to be interpreted as representing Christ's past coming, his future coming and his present coming through grace in the hearts of men. The tradition of the Advent wreath began only a few hundred years ago among Lutherans of eastern Germany, probably as one of the many light symbols used in winter. In churches and homes today, the wreath of evergreens is suspended from the ceiling or placed on a table with four candles at equal distances. During the four weeks of the season families and congregations gather for short religious services and to light the candles, one additional candle each week until all four arc lit.
