Young Will-iams, who is about 24 years old. came here about nine monlhs ago from Ports-mouth, Ohio, and has been boarding at the American. Ho retired to his room about 3:30 o'clock and about 4 o'clock this morning was discovered by tlic hotel cook lying unconscious in the court at the rear of the hotel. He had two serious cuts about the head and the fracture of the leg referred to. When he recovered consciousness he was una-ble to give an account of how he came where he was found, and, as he was a was a victim of somnambulism durincr his boyhood, it is thought he walked out of the window while asleep. When found he had on bis street clothes, and it is thought he lay on the bed to rest before undressing, and fell asleep He fell forty feet to the roof of the kitchen, from which he bounded to the brick pavement tifteen feet below. How long ho had been lying there when found is not positively known, but it is thought ho fell about midnight, as about that hour some of tho guests of the hotel hear a noise which might have been caused by the fall, but gave it but little notice, as no sounds followed it. It was a miraculous escape from instant deal h. and whUo there aro no indica-tions that the man is injured internally, his condition is very serious, and it is feared his leg must be amputated THE OTHER SIDE. The Car Crow Tell How tho Arcleent Actu-iill- y Ocoorred. The fact that a collision had taken place between a lineman for the elec-tric light company and au electric car yesterday afternoon skeins to have ex-cited more iuterest than is usually be-stowed on such episodes. It was an ordinary event reported without em-bellishment in these columns the par-ticulars having liern volunteered by two alleged eye witnesses one of whom was working in an altcrnato position w ith the injured man. To get the other side of tho story, however, a reporter intercepted ear No. 2.S, and asked for an interview with the crew, consist';:., of Conductor Kich and Motorman Are-liart- . The former gentleman, who was at that present moment working the crank or motor lever, gave the story, He represents that since hostilities be-gan botweeti tho company and its em-ployes, outside influence sympathizing with the latter have made it au object to throw into the way of the new re-cruits obstacles and dcluys. llo claims that this was tho ease yesterday, and says wheu the car bad whipped tho corner Wilson was stooping over the blow-po- t with his back to the ear while his pnrd-ne- r was facing it and saw it coming. As the spot was reached he says Wil-son, studiously keeping his back to the car, got in the way and whs struck by tho platform, when ho (Kich) sobvul him by the coat and threw him ouVif tho path. This, says Kich ami Arohait, is the manner in which tho accident was enacted. In the meantime everything is iptiet at the general olliees of the rninp.iny. Burchell is placed tit the bar and asked to plead to tho indictment charg-ing him with the murder of F. C. Hen-wel- l. The evidence against the accus-ed is entirely circumstantial but thopros-eeutio- u claims to be thoroughly convinc-ing of his guilt, Beuwell a young was on February 21 last, found dead on tho edge of Mud lako iu Oxford county. An investigation had disclosed the fact that particular pains were tak-en to remove everything from the vic-tim's clothes that might lead to a dis-covery of tho identity of the body. A cigar case ou which was Benwell's name, however, was overlooked. Hen-wel- l, who was of well-to-d- parents came here from England on tho advice of Hurehell to engage iu stock farming near Niagra Falls. On February 17th the party consisting of Iienwell, Hurc-hil- l, the latters wile, and a man named Felly, got off tho train at Eastwood station to visit the farm which Hurcliu'.l represented that he owned in that vicinity. Uurclioll found some excuse for sending his wife and the man Felly back to the station, and he and Hentveil walked on toward the alleged farm. After that Henwell was not seen alive. The Crown's case is that as Burehell's farm was a pure myth, ho dreaded ex-posure and to avoid this ho shot and killed Henwell. When the body was found Hurehell went to Frineeto'n and was the first to identify it. The pris-oner is so confident of acquittal, that be is making arrangements, he says, for returning to England. Word was promptly dispatched to Froto, where Nicholas ttfoesbeek, tho alleged polyg-amous husband to Miss House w as notified. 'The search for the tt it- - ness has been one of the most thrilling and eventful in the annals of frontier detective work, and for three years the clever(st arliliees of the fly cap bate been thwarted. They were outwitted at every move upon the official chess board, and noth-ing but phenomenal perseverance and eudiiianee would hate kept the search alive. To tho official world she was for some time dead for months, mid then another clew w as developed. Finally it w as reported that she had turned her number two's up to the daisies, but the ruse wouldn't work, ami tho search continued w ith unabated zeal. She was filially traced to her secluded moorings, however, and will now appear iu the role of a tt itness against his indicted lordship. Nicholas (iroesbeck, the alleged hus-band for whose prosecution the witness is wanted is one of the wealthiest In-habitants of Froto, having acquired riches that placed him among the fore-most of frontier autocrats. The Indict-ment charges him wi'h adultery, the result of this unrighteous alliance mak-ing itself manifest iu a single child. Mr. (iroesbeck has al-ready served one term iu the penitentiary for unlawful cohabitation and the present rase against him will be waged with better zeal and aggros, iveiies. This afternoon Mr. (iroesbeck accompanied by his attorney Col. Ottowa, Out., Sept. 20. Sir John MaoDonald, premier of the Dominan, delivered most important speech up-on the trade relations between Canada and the United States, at Morrisburg, Ont. Speaking of the McKinley tariff bill now before the United States con-gress, Sir John said that no doubt s would rather the bill did not pass, but as tho measure was about to become a law it would be well to con-sider its commercial complexion. Whe-ther tho bill was dictated by unfriendly motives, or owed its origin solely to the pursuance of a deliuite line of commerci-al poliey.he would not undertake to say. He had "no wish to impute unfriendly mo-tives, yet undeniably its efforts would be detrimental to Canada's interests, it would check and have a tendency to dimiuish its volume of commercial in-tercourse between tho two countries. Hut the fault of such a result could not be attributed to Canada. Ho said that since the abrogation of the reciprocity treaty of 1855, the different govern-ments, conservative and reform alike, had endeavored to secure improved trade relations between the two coun-tries. If the McKinley bill passed the Canadians were not going to cry about it like children, but meet it iu the best way they could. After tho renuncia-tion of the old reciprocity treaty, Can-ada opened up new channels of trade and in a fev years the people were 'al-most in as good a position as ever, in the same manly spirit in which they acted then they must act now.
