Show MINISTERS UNANIMOUSLY INDORSE THE PROTEST FILED AGAINST APOSTLE SMOOT The Ministerial association- at Its regular reg-ular meeting held this morning discussed dis-cussed the Smoot case and- by a rising, unanimous vote indorsed the citizens protest against the seating of the apostle apos-tle by the United States Senate as a conservative statement of the conditions existing in Utah and affecting the eligibility eligi-bility of Mr. Smoot as Senator. The resolution adopted by the min isters will be filed with the Senate Committee Com-mittee on Privileges, and Elections. The petition praying that United States Senatorrelect Apostle Reed Smoot be allowed to take his 'seat, which was quietly circulated Saturday, has, it is understood, been forwarded to Washington. This brief document, the full text of which was published in Saturday's Telegram, Tele-gram, Is signed by twenty-nine per sons, Gov. Wells' name heading the list. The men who have been concerned in formulating and securing signers to the statement on behalf of Apostle Smoot say that many more signers could have been obtained had the petition peti-tion been given a general circulation, but inasmuch as the protest of the Mln- , isterial association, contained only the names of a few prominent men. it was (Continued on Page 10.) The request for signatures was made to very few Mormons, it being the intention in-tention of Mr. Smoot's backers to have the great majority of the signers tome from among the non-Mormons. It is probable that the efforts of the Smoot men will not cease with the forwarding for-warding of the petition that the apostle be permitted to take his seat in the United States Senate. To offset the effect ef-fect of the protest forwarded to Washington Wash-ington last week, they will, it is asserted, as-serted, prepare an exhaustive statement setting forth conditions in. Utah from their point of view and an exposition of the alleged causes which led to the election of Apostle Smoot. It is said that the list of signers to this will be still more exclusive than were the names upon the petition Just forwarded forward-ed to the capital, and that every effort will be made to prevent its contents from becoming public. |
