Show the johnny gold mine from a mere stringer to a well developed gold mine with immense bodies of pay ore in its workings such is the history of the johnny mine and this history has been only a few years in the making in doing assessment work on the johnny property a stringer of quartz in the porphyry was found within a few feet from the surface by its original owners at a depth of twenty six feet this stringer widened out to eighteen inches of ore car carrying carrein sensational values in the yellow metal the importance of the discovery attracted the attention of experienced nevada mining men frank wilson and W J dooley who were identified with the early history of the great de lamar and april fool mines at de lamar nevada these gentlemen purchased the johnny from N P dooley C 0 newell and C robertson shortly after they were joined by F D clift henry newell and W J HaE halloran oran of salt lake city in this enterprise and the johnny company was organized and active work inaugurated in the extensive development and equipment of what has since turned out to be a bonanza proposition the company has been exceedingly conservative in its management and without any blow or bluster has expended large sums of money in the exploitation of what is now the leading gold mine of the south the members of the company have put up their own money in the operation of the mine no stock has hag been off offered ered for sale and none is to be had which largely accounts for their established policy of doing their mining in their mine instead of in the newspapers I 1 I 1 underground development there are but very few who realize that in the workings of the johnny all of three thousand feet of sinking drifting and up raising has been accomplished during the brief period in which the mine has been in the possession of its present owners in the old workings the shaft has been sunk to a depth of feet with extensive levels run on the vein east and west at the 50 and stations with dinzes and up raises at various points connecting the several levels thereby blocking out immense reserves resumes of splendid milling ore some of the rock being so rich that it would insure handsome returns to the company if it should be marketed in a crude state at ai a depth of twenty six feet in the shaft as above stated the stringer widened out to eighteen en inches at fifty feet it was three and a halt feet in width at it was twelve feet wide and at the foot ae level tel it had gained in size until it measured at least twenty feet between walls at the the ledge has not been crosscut cross cut but it is reasonable to believe that it is still larger at this depth from the old workings in doing development work only in the neighborhood of tons of ore has been taken out and shipped to the smelters shelters sm elters in the crude no having been done with the excel tion of from the foot level up the average value of this ore is placed at from 10 to 20 to the ton with 14 as a fair average alt although bough in the mining of this ore some sensationally high grade mineral was encountered from time to time possibly a ton and a half selected from carload shipments which brought the company a dollar and a half a pound prior to the erection ere action of reduction works the crude ore shipments brought the company in the neighborhood of the new workings at the johnny were started sometime in august of last year at a point or feet east of the old shaft an upraise was made from the foot level of the old workings when connection was made from the surface sinking was then resumed and at a point fifty feet below the level in the new shaft drift no 2 was started and this level is now being run both east and west on the vein and all in ore both of these drifts are now in a distance of feet and the theore ore body ranges from two and a half to five feet in width some of the ore being remarkably high grade sinking is also in progress from no 2 level and the next level will soon be started to connect with the lower levels of the old workings the shafts are fine examples of workmanship and the mining has been systematically and intelligently prosecuted and it is estimated that approximately sufficient ore is blocked out in the mine workings to keep the mill with a capacity of twenty five tons daily in constant and successful operation for a year to come from the new workings car samples for october averaged a trifle better than 20 a ton in the precious metal although irl in places bodies of extremely rich ore have been encountered and a strike of this character has been of recent occurrence tho the company has also done a large amount of work in the development of adjoining claims in which it is interested the reduction plant of the johnny before the johnny erected its present fine mill exhaustive tests were made by a 3 two stamp tremaine mill originally installed in for the treatment of creole ore ord meeting with satisfactory results the plan PI ant which now adorns the mine was installed stalled ln i a halftone half tone illustration of which is 9 given iven bu 0 ano another ther page e in this issue of the mining re review afew the equipment of this mill is arranged for the treatment of ore by amalgamation and cyaniding cyan iding with power space and capacity for ten more stamps the battery consist of ten stamps of 1000 pounds each in the milling about 70 per cent of the values is saved on the plates the remaining values being recovered by the cyanide plant making a total extraction of about 97 per cent on an average which is a showing that any company could well be proud of the mine is equipped with steam hoist cage an ideal shaft air compressor and machine drills and water sufficient with ample surplus developed in the mine for all mining purposes the water being pumped to a storage tank on the mountain above the mill from which point it gravitates through pipes to all portions of the works the development of this water solves the problem of supply for mining purposes although water for domestic use will have to be secured elsewhere euse where the com company pany is ls giving employment to a force of about sixty men at the mine and mill such is the history of the johnny mine its development operation and equipment it is a record to rejoice in a showing that should convince the doubting that in this mine the johnny people tave have the making of one of the greatest gold mines to be found in the southern portion of the state the company quietly intelligently and successfully cess fully has expended many thousands of dollars in its exploitation no outside aid has leon been asked or desired and it is now believed that the time is near at hand when handsome profits will reward it for its labors indeed it is predicted that the johnny will have reached a regular divi bend paying basis by the first of the year the official household of the johnny company is as follows F A clift president henry newell vice president W J halloran treasurer W J dooley secretary and frank wilson |
