Show STRENGTH RATHER THAN WEAK-1 NESS. i Speaking about the opposition Governor Gov-ernor Campbell's re-nomination met ith at Cleveland at the late conve ntion, n-tion, the Philadelphia Ledger says: 'The opposition is an indication of strength rather than weakness. It comes from the corrupt politicians of Cincinnati, who were resolutely opposed by the governor when he forced through the legislature a bill providing for a nonpartisan non-partisan board of public improvements for Cincinnati. Governor Campisei.l, who was a sailor during the war of t lie rebellion and has been a member of congress, is extremely popular, because he is a frank bold man, with clear convictions con-victions of right and duty. His friends are confident that the opposition in his j own party will be more than offset by his gain of reform votes from the Republican Re-publican organization. He was elected in 1SS9 by 10,872 plurality over Fora-ker, Fora-ker, but he has a much more popular man to contend against now Mr. McKinley and the main issue, although al-though this is a state contest, will be the tariff. On this there is no dodging, for Governor Campbell has takn a stand against the McKinley bill and the principles it represents which leaves no room for shuffling. Ohio will be given a lively canvass and the result of the election will be in one sense of national importance, for it may shape the events ot 1892. |
