Show Page - THE HERALD, Provo. Utah. 12 May 25. 1986 Sportsline Ricks signs local spikers Four local prep volleyball stars have three from Spanish Fork to play for signed letters-of-inteRicks College next season. Setter Ann Hall, middle hitter Tracie Tarone and outside hitter Kathy Maughan, all from the Dons' state championship team, will join Pleasant Grove's middle and outside hitter Lila Fugal at Ricks. Other Utah volleyball players to sign include Box Elder hitters Molli Wilkins and LeeAnn Geldmacher and outside hitter Andrea Williams from Ogden. Trappers set tryouts The Salt Lake Trappers announced today the signing of another player as well as arrangements for this year's local tryout. n Bob Tinkey joins outfielder Eddie Cowans as the second official member of the 1986 Trappers. Tinkey was a sixth-roun- d draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers last year. He hit .301 with four home runs and 21 RBI's with Helena in 1985. from Tinkey, a Youngstown, Ohio, was named to the Virginia Athletic Conference Team in 1984 and 1985 while at West Liberty State College. The Trappers also set the date for their tryout camp for prospective players. Thursday, June 12th, local talent will have the opportunity to break into professional baseball at Derks Field. However, unlike last year, the camp will not be completely open. Those interested should obtain an application from the ballclub to detail their past baseball experience. After examining the applications, approximately 3040 players will be invited to the tryout camp. Some of those players will work out with the team for a few days before final selections are made. "Last year we had quite a few people who were simply not qualified ball players," said Steve Pear Third-basema- 6-- er Trappers general manager in explaining the change. "This way we hope to give those who actually have a chance to play, the opportunity of a fair workout." Eight players eventually made last year's Trapper squad from the Salt Lake tryout. One, pitcher Ed McCarter, was named to the Piteam. Mconeer League Carter and pitcher Darren Garrick are now playing at San Jose in the California League. UTC pitcher finishes high Allison Bench, top pitcher for the UTC women's fast-pitc- h softball team, finished seventh in the nation in strikeouts according to the final NJCAA statistics. Bench struck out 131 batters in the 33 games she pitched this season for the Lady Wolverines. A 4 freshman out of Arvada, Colo., Bench pitched almost every inning of every game for the UTC squad this year, winning 19 and losing 14, while compiling a 1.26 earned run average. The Lady Wolverines finished second in the this season. son, All-St- ar 5-- WI-CA- C HCAC honors 16 cougars Sixteen members of the HCAC champion BYU women's track team were named to the C track team.
