A good to excellent opening is expected for the Northern Region on all major impoundments, especially Pineview and East Canyon. All of the rivers and smaller streams will be high and roily and will be stocked only if water levels recede before the opening. . ' ' ' f Page BEAVER, CREEK This stream in Summit County will be heavily stocked with catchable rainbow prior to the .opening, and the creel might include a healthy brown trout. Anglers should be aware that the lower section runs through private land, and future access depends upon the good judgment and conduct while on and off the stream. - BEAVER CREEK - This Weber County stream will be high for the opening but will be stocked with catchables. After the opening, anglers using a variety of baits should be able to pick up near limits of rainbow with an occasional cutthroat. fishing 17 fishing poundments will be stocked, and an extra bonus of our to six pound rainbow may surprise many a fisherman the first time out this year. LOST CREEK RESERVOIR - This reservoir is expected to provide fair fishing for 10 to 12 pound rainbow and cutthroat on the opening weekend and throughout the season. An increased stocking quota of fingerlings is expected to improve opening weekend catches. Anglers and campers are reminded that no services , including drinking water, camping sites and facilities, are available at this reservoir. LOST CREEK - This stream is expected to provide good angling for the opener. If the reservoir above the creek spills, anglers can expect excellent catches of cutthroat immediately below the dam. Access to Lost Creek is limited, and anglers must secure permission before setting afield. Underdeveloped camping facilities are available only at Lost Creek State Park. BIRCH CREEK RESERVOIR - This reservoir is full, but fishing on the opening is expected to be from good to excellent with catches of rainbow and native cutthroat ranging in size from 10 to 14 inches. Fishing success throughout the summer should continue to be from good to excellent. LYNN RESERVOIR - This reservoir in Western Box Elder County is for the angler who enjoys fishing without a large crowd around. Catchable rainbows are expected to dominate the creel, but dont be surprised to snag onto a three of four pounder. Camping BLACKSMITH FORK RIVER - This river will be high for the opening but is usually pretty clear. It is the Northern Regions Wild Trout stream and is hatchery stocked only in two impoundments. The upper portion of the river is classed as a quality section. The only method of angling permitted on this section is artificial lures with a creel. Possession limit is six trout. This is an excellent stream during the entire season for the angler who likes solitude, quality and aesthetic beauty in angling on a wild Trout MILL HOLLOW RESERVOIR - It is questionable if this lake will be accessible for the opening. If it is, the angler can expect to lock horns with rainbow and brook trout. Excellent camping sites are available near the lake. stream. BOX ELDER CREEK - It is anticipated that this small stream will be planted with cat- chables about one week before the opening. This stream does not attract too much pressure after the opening weekend and does produce some good fishing for German browns throughout the season. Browns ranging in size upwards of two pounds are common in the fall of the year. CAUSEY RESERVOIR - The reservoir is full and expected to be quite muddy for the opening. Fishing is expected to be rather slow on opening and for die remainder of the year. Occasional hot spots will yield the persistent angler a combination of rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout ranging from three fourths to five pounds. There are limited camping facilities and no boat launching site at this reservoir. CIIALK CREEK - This stream will have poor fishing for the opening, mainly because of high water conditions. As the summer progresses, fishing should pick up for cutthroats and planted rainbows. All of the area is under private ownership, and permission must be obtained prior to fishing. The main complaint landowners have is that most anglers in the past left the stream banks strewn with trash. r - EAST CANYON CREEK - This water is expected to remain at flood stage condition for the opening. When runoff waters recede and for the remainder of the season, this stream will offer a great challenge to the angler who likes to outsmart large natives and brown trout. Heavy stream bank cover makes fishing a real challenge, but for those with the right skills, the reward is a stringer of nice fish. Access to most of the creek is through private property, and anglers are advised to contact landowners for permission prior to the opening.. EAST CANYON RESERVOIR - Anglers can expect an excellent opening at this reservoir. Preseason studies by Division personnel indicate that lots of 11 to 12 inch rainbow and cutthroat trout will be available for boat and shore fishermen. Boat fishermen also have the possibility of catching 11 to 12 inch kokanee salmon in addition to the other trout facilities are available at East Canyon State Park on the north end of the reservoir. EAST FORK LITTLE BEAR - This stream is expected to be a little high, but still fishable for the opening.' Camping and access are limited, but wise courteous anglers who seek landowner permission will fill their creel on the opening with catchable rainbows. During late summer and early fall, this stream produces excellent catches of pound size and bet- ter brown trout. sites are limited around the reservoir. OGDEN RIVER - All forks of this river above Pineview reservoir are expected to be very high and roily and may not be stocked for the opening. The portion of the river below Pineview should give anglers ample opportunity to catch 10 to 12 inch rainbow that have gone over the overflow a good bet for full season angling on this popular stream. PINEVIEW RESERVOIR - This very popular northern Utah water is expected to draw one of the largest opening day crowds to catch rainbow trout ranging in size from 6 to 24 inches. Boat anglers should bring in excellent catches of rainbow by trolling a popgear-worcombination. Shore fishermen who concentrate their efforts around the south shore and all inlets should also fill their creel. Inlets to this body of water include South Fork, Spring Creek, Middle Fork, Gertsen Creek and Norht Fork. This water usually produces good catches June through November. m PORCUPINE RESERVOIR - This Cache County water is one fo the most unpredictable bodies of water in the state. Anglers can expect to catch from one to a limit of rainbow, brown, cutthroat and kokanee salmon. They might also hook into one of the many lunkers (four to eight pounds) brown or rainbow, hiding in this mysterious water. Boat launching and camping facilities are extremely limited on this reservoir. PROVO RIVER - This river is expected to be high and roily for the opening. For the angler who is looking for lunker brown, the stretch of this river between Hailstone Junction and Woodland is agood bet throughout the season. The upper section of the along the Mirror Lake Highway will be stocked with rainbow, and an occasional native will sweeten the creel. RIGHT HAND FORK - This tiny stream will yield rainbow and cutthroat to the angler who is willing to fight a little brush and walk a little mile for an opening day trip. Limited amount of camping is available very popular midsummer combination water-fishing-picnicki- ROCKPORT RESERVOIR - Opening pressure will be heavy with success good on this popular water. Anglers can expect to creel 11 to 13 inch rainbow trout. After the opening, the angler is pretty hard pressed to find an undisturbed area to fish because this is a very popular recreation reservoir. SMITH AND MOREHOUSE RESERVOIR - The fishing is expected to be very good here for the opening. Since this lake is drained every year, the fish available will consist of almost 100 percent catchahlp rainbow. Good camping sites are available in this area. NORTHEASTERN UTAH FISHING FORECAST -- 1974 ECHO RESERVOIR - Fishing on this body of water on the opening and for the remainder of the season is expected only to be fair. However, the persistent angler who wants to fill his creel on the opening should fish near the inlet along the river bridge. This reservoir is also known to yield lunker (up to five pounds) brown trout throughout the season. ETNA RESERVOIR - Expect to have very poor opening and general season on this reservoir. The Division will not plant any fish. Fishing, camping and general trespass is by express permission only. energy crisis minded angler, this small stream and pond should provide good angling for fishermen who do not want to travel great distances from Salt Lake City on the opening. Both the stream and pond will be stocked for opening weekend and periodically through tout the year. Breathtaking scenery and an occasional brook or cutthroat will also add enjoyment for a backyard The Northeastern Region is expecting an exceptional fish opener this year. All personnel have been extremely busy preparing the various waters around the region for the opener on June 1. The following is a rundown of what may be expected. STARVATION RESERVOIR - This water is a relatively new impoundment and fishing has been very good in years past. This year the reservoir is being drawn down for repair on the bridge so fishing should be extra fast while they are concentrated. There is a good potential of catching some large brown and cutthroat trout in this water. Improved cam- pgrounds are available. FARMINGTON CREEK and POND - For the RED CREEK RESERVOIR - This water opens with the general season this year (June 1). Recent surveys on the reservoir showed several large cutthroat trout about 23 inches in length. This water is stocked with several hundred rainbow catchables prior to the opener. No improved campgrounds available. fishing trip. BIG SANDWASII RESERVOIR - This water always provides a good fishing experience on the opener. Most fish caught exceed a foot in length with best success from boats. IIYRUM RESERVOIR - This body of water should produce a fair catch of pound size rainbows for the angler on opening weekend. Boat launching, camping, water and sanitation facilities are available at the State Park. Anglers who like to mix it up elbow to elbow will find plenty of action in the spill bowl just below the dam. LEFT HAND FORK - This is one of Cache Countys most popular streams for the opening and throughout the season because of the easy access to the stream and excellent camping sites. Opening day anglers should expect excellent rainbow fishing, with a brook or cutthroat thrown in to add a little spice a good bet for the entire season. RIVER Success on this river for the opening is expected to be very poor, but watch out when the highwater is gone catches of rainbow, cutthroat, brown and an brook will brighten the smile of all anglers on this popular water. The im- LOGAN - ac-casio- STEINAKER RESERVOIR - Boat fishermen are usually more successful on this water with a catch of fish averaging 12 inches in length. Improved campgrounds are available. , MOON LAKE - This water is located in the high country but is accessible for the opener. It should provide a good fishery for rainbow, brown, cutthroat, and brook trout. The water will receive a good plant of rainbow catchables prior to the opener. Improved cam- pgrounds are available. LAKE FORK RIVER - This river is controlled by Moon Lake, so it should be clear and provide good fishing for brown, cutthroat and rainbow. It has been stocked with rainbow catchables. |
