ot H H mcdowell brother of 0 P mcdower of this city he visited ogden last bummer and contributed several articles on his journey west to the sentinel at pon alac Illin mr mcdowell is not only a bood fighter bedoe an old G A II 11 veteran with high honors and an enviable record but also a good writer displaying marked ability he says our engine whistled down brakes the conductor called out salt lake city our long train rolled into the depot and we retook betook to the plat tarro where e could alet slet a more comprehensive view ot the great city nes the foot of he mountain away to the eastward in full view of our searching eyes we beheld the great temple hoe threshold it is said has never been crossed by the gentile the city is beautifully situated at the base of the wasatch mountains which are a part of the great continental range dividing the far west from the plains which extend from the base of the to the missouri river the finest and most beautiful residences occupy what is known as the bench once no doubt the shore of a great inland see from alch perhaps ages ago the waters receded and leluea in the basin of the great salt lake which is distant eighteen miles to the westward the chiy commands a view of the entire valley and the busy hum of its many industries reminds the weary traveler that he is still within the bounds of a civilization that knows no competitor its beautiful board streets one hundred and thirty two feet wide and lined on either side with symmetrical shade trees give to the city an arcadian beauty that reminds one of the orchard of palms as described by lew wallace in his wonderful benhur a tale of the christ streams of pure water flow in ditches bordering botn sides of the streets from which the weary traveler may quench his chirat with refreshing satisfaction in the distance temple square looms up and here are situated in most picturesque beauty the mormon tabernacle and assembly hall the great tabernacle ia immense in its proportions the root taking on the appearance of boat turned upside down and can be seen from nearly every part of the city the temple it Is said is with the exception of st patricks cathedral in new york the grandest and costliest cost liest ecclesiastical la country its cost being two hundred feet long one hundred feet wide and one hundred feet high with four towers two hundred and twenty tea in height the building la of snow white granite and standing on one of the loftiest loft iest points in the city may be viewed for fafty miles up and down tha valley the bee hive and lion house are nearby near by they being once the secluded homes of brigham young and his many wives and children the city la built in a modern and attractive manner many private res are palatial in appearance and are picture si of architectural beauty the arul of the engine and the gentlemanly gentle manly conductors all aboard found us again on our way ogden the gem city of the talley toa ing our destination it wa sabbath and the deep tones of the church bells as we left the city in the distance reminded us hat the peo pla were gathering for worship away on to the west northwest we got sight of old salt lake the most wonderful inland aea in all america how w desired to visit it wander up and down its shores and plunge in its hearing bosom but side trip were out of the question sand so on and on we were swiftly can led until the warning words ogden change for the coast reminded us that the end et our lourney was reached before alighting from the train we were filled with pleasurable delight at seeing in the great throng ther assembled one who was anxiously awaiting our coming a brother thorn we had not seen tor twelve long years 0 P mcd what feelings ot affection and brotherly love well up in the heart after so long a preparation none but he who has endured its pangs can ever know our stay in ogdan was short much than we had hoped it would be but home interests and the busy cares of life which we had thrown to the winds when we started on our journey demanded a short stay and a hurried departure the time was most delightfully spent visiting relatives and friends and viewing the and social and business attractions tr of the city ogden in its makeup make up is much like salt lake city hough not 0 o large inhabitants made up of cormons mormons and gentiles in due proportion its long straight wide avenues lined with beautiful shade treba its palatial residences beautiful modern home and massive business houses give it the appearance of a city built not as rome was upon her seen hills but at the foot of the snow capped mountains that look down upon her from their dizzy heights and proclaim hor the city of the valley the climate is most its scenery enchanting and its surrounding inviting we rode through many of the line streets and compared its beautiful and luxurious appearance now with the wild and natural from which it sprang long years ao the business men are prosperous and alie farmers who live in close are bapp contented and on the highway to wealth mr bennett a nearby farmer and a gentleman ot culture and refinement informed us i hat he realized from the various products of bis farm horticulture and otherwise from one hundred and fafty to five hundred dollars per acre annually ills home grown peaches were the finest we ever it was our pleas uio 10 be introduced to the mayor a gentleman of fine qualifications and the owner and publisher of the ogden standard a paper that leads all others by its newsy columns we met many business men bankers merchants mero hants and professionals and we were impressed with the thrift energy and push of this prosperous city we also hod the pleasure of a visit with an old a livingston county man a pontiac man a man not wholly unknown to fame nor wholly unknown as a terror io evildoers graftema gra ftera caucus borrup and bood lers in ye early days of pontiac james stout the onetime editor and proprietor of the sentinel forty ears and more ago what a delightful evening we spent with him and his stately better halt annot f behold at the end of a scribbling pen although bordering on ninety
