J., Dec. 1 blames Ogllvie Clophane, widely known because be-cause of his pioneer typewriter and. linotype Industries, is" dead in his' home here, following a stroke of apoplexy apo-plexy which attacked hiro a week ago He was 68 years old. Although a lawyer Mr. Clcphane devoted de-voted most of his energies to developing devel-oping the typewriter and type-setting machines, and he has been called the "father of tho linotype." It was his. encouragement and fmanclaJ support that enabled Ottmar Mergcnthaler to perfect that machine that bears the latter's name. The Idea for the machine ma-chine was furnished bv Mr. Clephane. Mr. Clephane was born in Washington. Wash-ington. He became Interested in the development of the typewriter while secretary to Secretary of State Seward. Sew-ard. His oxceptional ability brought him early In cleso contact with President Pres-ident Buchanan. President Lincoln and other noted men. who became his personal friends. |
