Woo! growers of Ogden and other places oi northern Ltah, are up la arms against a proposition to release certain sheep near Kelton, Utah, Irooi quarantine. A meeting was held by representative shctpinen in Ogden last evening. A strong protest was voiced by those who attended tho meeting and a committee, consisting of William Hunter, John Spiers and J. F. Burton vu3 appelated to meet with tho state board of sheep eoro-nilshlonors eoro-nilshlonors and voice the protest to them in tho strongest possible terms. This comuilttou will meet the stato board tomorrow In Salt Iake. The sheep belong to Thomas Smart of Logan and they are in quarantlno for scabbles near Kelton, on what is known as the "Hogup" range, it la said by tho sheepmen that If the quarantine quar-antine be lifted from tho Smart sheep, tho sheep will cross over the Dove Creek , trail to southern Idaho, over which annuajly pass something like 400,000 sheep. It Is also contended that if the Smart sheep pass over this trail It will necessitate driving all other herds around the trail which would mean many extra miles In order or-der to avoid being Infected. Tho sheepmen have boen advised that the Smalt sheep are about to be released from quarantine, and they are determined that It shall not be done. It Is said by tho home people that It would be much better and cheaper In the long run for the sheep men to pay the expense of dipping Lho quarantined sheep where they are now being grazed, than to permit them to pass over auy section of country frequented by other sheep. The quarantine of the small section sec-tion of country Immediately north of Ogden river, next to the baso of the mountains, Instituted recently, Is of minor significance to the sheep Interests. In-terests. The sheep men state that It will have no effect whatever uiion the handling of tho herds between the winter and summer ranges. The sheep, placed under quarantine at this place are few In number and do not graz upon any range used by the general herds of the country. If the quarantine quaran-tine should not be lifted by the tlmo the range herds come In from, tho desert on their way to the summer ranges, they will have to pass to the south of the quarantined district. |
