The following Is the vote of the separate sep-arate Ilouses of the Legislature as cast for Senator Tuesday. VOTE IN THK SENATE. The last act of the Senatorial drama so far as Utah Is concerned, was enacted en-acted in the chamber of the House of Representatives yesterday at noon. The Senate and House of the Legislature Legisla-ture met in joint session, ratified the election of Reed Smoot, and listened to addrcssos by Senator Smoot, Gov. Wells and Supremo Justice Baskin. The attendance of spectators was hardlcy so largo as on the previous day but those who were present were in an enthusiastic frame of mind and the demonstration accorded to the Senate Sena-te relect was all that ho could have desired. de-sired. The only noto of discord in the whole ceremony, if discord it could bo called, was the address of Gov. Wells, in which he studiously refrained from complimenting the Legislature on its choice, and oven said that he had no comment to make. It was plainly evident, however, that the Governor's "J- attitude was prompted by a heartfelt ' desire for the welfare of his native State and not by any lower or less worthy sentiment The document presented to Mr. Smoot by President Allison of the Senate reads as follows. Be it known, and this is to certify that at 12 o'clock meridian of the 21st day of January, A. D. 1003, It being the day following that on which proceedings pro-ceedings took place by which Reed Smoot of Prcvo City, Utah, was named nam-ed by each house for Senator in the Congress of the United States from the State of Utah, as provided by the laws of Congress, the members of the Senate and the nouso of Representatives Representa-tives at Salt Lako City, the capital of said State, a quorum of each house being be-ing present and thereupon the Journal of each of said houses was produced and was read, and it appearing from an inspection of said Journals that the said Reed Smoot had, on the 20th day of January, 1003, received a majority of all the votes In each house for Senator Sena-tor as aforesaid, he was then and there declared duly elected Senator In, the I Congress of the Uuitcd States from the Stato of Utah for the term of sis years from March 4, A. D. 1003. This, by the way, is not tho certificate certifi-cate that will bo presented to tho Senate Sen-ate by Senator Smoot. Gov. Wells will make out a handsomely engrossed certificate cer-tificate of election which will bo certified cer-tified by Secretary of Stato Hammond and used for tho purpose when tho new Senator gets ready to hand In ills credentials. At 11:55 tho eighteen Senators walked walk-ed Into tho Houso chambor. On the stroke of 12 President Allison . J. -called tho joint session to order and f ' directed the clerk of the Senate to call tho roll of Senators. The roll of the Houso was then called by Chief Clerk Cummlngs. The Chaplain of the Scnato offered prayer, praying for the Legislators, the President, tho pcoplo of tho State, the National Congress and the sufferers suffer-ers from the coal famine. By direction of the presiding officer, the Chief Clerk of the Houso read such part of the minutes of the House as related to the election of United States Senator. "If there is no objection the minutes min-utes of the joint session will show that the entire Journal of tho House' was read," said the President. There was no objections' A delay of five minutes was occasioned occasion-ed by the failure of tho Senate Journal to arrive from the printer. In tills interval in-terval the members conversed with each other and with their friends. Those who were present at the Senatorial Sena-torial election two years ago noted the entire absence of llowers from the desks of the members. Not a llowcr was In sight save some artificial blossoms on the ladles' hats. The Scnato Journal arrived and was read. At 12:15 President Allison said: "The Journals of the Houso and Senate having shown that Reed Smoot has received a majority of the votes In each House, I hereby declared Reed Smoot elected United States Senator from tho Statcof Utah." Tho announcement was received with applause and Mr. Nash immediately immed-iately offered a resolution that a com-mltec com-mltec of four be appointed to notify Mr. Smoot of his election. |
