Show YOUNG MAN MEETS DEATH In Logan Canyon Monday Night at hands of Companion Compan-ion who Shot Him. Last Monday night a most unfortunate unfor-tunate accident occurred In Logan canyon, can-yon, In which Nells Jensen, a young sheephcrder met death nt the hands of a companion, John Hailing. Jensen was mistaken for a bear and was shot through the shoulder. Hailing and Jensen belong hi Hear River city and were herding sheep for Alma Nelson of that place. The boys with the herd were located In the right fork of Logan canyon near Ricks canyon at the tlmo of the accident, and the unfortunate affair was tho result of tho herd having been distributed dis-tributed by bears some nights previously. pre-viously. On this particular night young Jensen had found It necessary to get out of bed and had gone some little distance from the bunking place. At this time tho sheep were disturbed dis-turbed and the watch dogs made a great noise with their barking. Hailing, Hai-ling, who was not wakened at the time of Jensen's departure, was aroused by the noise of tho dogs, and thinking that the bears were among the flock, grabbed his gun and made in the direction di-rection of the herd. "Seeing a black object ahead of him, the young man hi his excitement raised his gun and llred with the result that his companion com-panion Jensen was killed. The boy was not killed outright, tho bullet going Into the shoulder and severing several large blood vessels. When struck, he fell to the ground without making a sound, but recovered re-covered sulllclently to get up and totter tot-ter over to the bunking place, and as ho sank down uttered tho words, "Johnnie, you havo killed me." Hailing, who was horrified almost beyond reason, did what he could for his dying companion and then left him to get help from another sheep camp. He finally located one, and some of the men returned with him, but none were able to give the wounded man any effective assistance, so that he died within a half hour. A messenger came to this city and hunted up Sheriff Rlgby who, with Marshall Crockett, went to the scene of the accident. A careful Investigation Investiga-tion led to belief that no blame could be attached to Hulling, who It seems is heart-broken over the affair. Hal-ling, Hal-ling, who Is but 22 years of age, and Jensen, who was but 10, had been companions for years and thought much of each other. Hailing was left in the mountains in charge of his sheep, but it is understood will, leave as soon as some one goes there to relieve re-lieve him. Jensen's body was brought to Logan Wednesday morning about 3 o'clock and taken charge of by Undertaker Llndquist, and finally taken to Hear River city that morning by Mr. Nelson, Nel-son, tho boys' employer. It is said that the blow falls heavily upon the dead boy's parents, as ho was their chief support. Mr. Jensen Is a sufferer from rheumatism and Mrs. Jensen Is an Invalid. The sympathy sym-pathy of ull who read will go out to them, and to tho young man who was so unfortunate as to cause his companion's com-panion's death. , Sheriff Rlgoy and Marshall Crockett say the trip to tho camp was a pretty rough one, It being necessary to walk not less than five miles after arriving arriv-ing at the head of tho RJcks canyon. |
