The Davis County School District passed a motion to allow the school to have the planning-us- e time. Twelve elementary schools in the district have been permitted planning time in the past, Bonnie Durance, district public relations director said. Besides a shortened school day on Monday, West Point Elementary School students will attend school five minutes longer each day Tuesday through Friday and begin school five minutes earlier Monday through Friday, Arlo Hinckley, principal at the school, said. Lunch time will also be reduced by ten minutes, he added. Children will still have the same amount of time to eat, Hinckley said, but they will have less time for play following lunch. He said only one bus schedule should be affected by the changes in the morning with the others working out pretty much the way they are. The buses will leave school five minutes earlier, though. Parents will be notified about any changes, he added. The changes will all go into effect Oct. 26, Hinckley said. Hincldey said the planning time was needed because most teachers are pretty tired at night to do much planning. Teachers will now have time to meet with other teachers in the same grade level and do some long range planning, he said. Teachers will not be leaving the school earlier, however, he added. Its up to us to make sure we make good use of the time. Muir Elementary School in Bountiful had earlier made a request to the district for planning use time, but the request was withdrawn by the school. Hinckley said the West Point School tried to receive approval for planning use time last spring, but so many parents were against it, the school decided against the proposal at that time. But this fall, notes were sent home to parents to see where they stood on the issue and to allow them a chance to vote for or against it, Hinckley said. Parents voted 71 percent in favor of the planning time, he added. One hundred percent of the teachers are in favor of the ' planning tune, he said.
