Show MT. ST. SCHOLASTICA'S ACADE- (Correspondence Intermountain Catholic.) Canyon City, Aug. 14. A flourishing educational institution is Mount Saint Scholastica's Academy, and this year it begins the term with a new building and enlarged facilities. This building is i)6x"4 and is similar in style to the present structure, and adjoins the main building on the west side. The new building was greatly needed owing to the crowded condition of the academy; Last year many applicants for admission admis-sion were refused because of the lack of accommodation. The academy, which is self-sustaining, makes provision pro-vision for a certain number of children w ho .attend gratis. There are eighteen Sisters engaged in . this noble ork of education. They belong to the ftene-dictive ftene-dictive Order of Chicago, and came here in 1890. They purchased of Judge Macon, the old Baptist Military Academy, Acad-emy, and opened a boarding school for young ladies. For three years the academy nourished. The destruction of the building and the difficulties attending attend-ing the erection of another, are well known to the public. In January, 1897, Mount Saint Scholastica's reopened in the present building, a structure 72x62 feet, possessing, all the modern improvements im-provements and conveniences. To the north, some feet from the school.' is a memorial chapel, the gift of Eugefie O'Reilly of Chicago. This is the most beautiful little chapel chap-el in the State. The front porch, recently re-cently added to the main building, is a magnificent donation of P. J. McCor-mack McCor-mack of Guffey. A neat little cottage for the reverend chaplain has just been completed in the southern part of the academy grounds. The grounds consist con-sist of lawns, promenades, croquet and tennis courts. . The new building will contain recreation,, recre-ation,, study and entertainment halls, class rooms, dormitories and studio. ; . ; The library, reception rooms, refectories refecto-ries and music rooms alone, to. remain in the old building. |
