Show T CIVILIZING THE FILIPINOS. The. manner in which the blessings of American civilization are following our flag in the Philippine." is being illus-I illus-I trated every now and then in ways which must make every decent American Ameri-can blush with shame. Manila and John Barrett has given us a very graphic description pf the beautiful, peaceful and highly civilized city that was before our troops entered the townhas become "a hell upon earth." to quote one American writer's description, descrip-tion, within the past twelve months, and all because of the bar rooms, the brothels, the vices, etc., which followed the Hag there. A writer, in the Spring- field Republican gives us this account of the way in which a detachment of the Twenty-sixth regiment entered a village in the Island of Panay: "An advance party went forward, ; but they were seen too soon, and the natives had fled when we entered the 1 village. We got a pop at a few, how- ?ver, fourteen dead being counted; no prisoners were taken. Looting was in J rrder after our entrance. Little was 1 ound, however a few bolos, a piece or wo of jewelry, and some native cloth. I c several shacks had small no-r mtionx, I i in them. I saw a little boy about 10 years old and a little girl about S years old led out of the town by their mother, moth-er, after we had fired it, and they were a pitiful sight. All had smallpox, an-i not a bit of clothing on. After burning the town we marched back." Talk about Spanish cruelty and barbarity bar-barity in the Philippines! We have slain more natives there during the past twelve months than Spain did in that number of years; and yet some folks wonder why the Filipinos do not hail our soldiers as friends and shout themselves hoarse whenever they see the Stars and Stripes! |
