The Tennessee Senate passed the resolution ratifying the woman suffrage suf-frage amendment to the federal Constitution Con-stitution on August 13 by a vote of 25 to 4 and the House of Representatives Representa-tives parsed the name on August 18 by a vote of 4 9 to 4 7. Tennessee In the thlrty-Hlxlh state to ratify, so this means the amendment of the Constitution Consti-tution and the enfranchisement of 27,000,000 women In time for the next election. In sixteen states women wom-en already had the full ballot. The Nineteenth amendment now adopted reads: Article Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote hhall not bo denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account ac-count of sex. Section 2. Congress shall have power by appropriate legislation to enforce the provisions of this article. Eight state legislatures, all southern, south-ern, voted ngainst ratflcation: Alabama, Ala-bama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware Dela-ware and Louisiana. North Carolina, which was the only other state besides be-sides Tennessee that could ratify in time for election, voted on August 17, by 25 to 23 In the Senate, to postpone actlou till 1921. |
