Show Geology of County The amazing display of vermillion cliffs, terraces, plateaus and canyons are evidence of profound and rapid erosion in Garfield County. There are few places in the world where the geologic column is so well exposed. The 5,185 square miles of the county is so well exhibited, so sculptured by erosion and arranged by structure that it is considered a classic geological spot. ' Igneous and sedimentary rock are well exposed; only metamorphics are missing. The Henry Mountains igneous intrusions are classics of structural geology. The fossils found within the county are plentiful and educational. Altitudes vary from the 4,200 feet of the Cane Spring Desert and Bullfrog Basin to the Henry, Escalante and Mt. Dutton areas where elevations rise to 11,000 feet. Along with the unusual geography come incredible deposits of minerals. Uranium is being mined near Ticaboo and a large processing mill is in full swing there. Enormous depostis of coal exist in the county which have yet to be mined. |
