Cannonville Gateway To Kodachrome l CANNONVILLE Located just a little over a mile from the southern boundary of Garfield County, Cannonville serves as the gateway to beautiful Kodachrome Basin State Reserve. The little town was founded in the early 1880's when about 200 families lived in the fertile valley irrigated with water from the Paria River. Proving unrealible, the river and its tributaries eventually cut deeply into the farmlands and water was finally brought into Cannonville from the East Fork canal into Tropic. In the spring along the ditch banks wild asparagus is abundant and in summer gardens abound. The very civic-minded little community com-munity has been honored for its self-improvement efforts more than once and its community center was built by a concerned citizenry. With a population of approximately ap-proximately 100 people, Cannonville children are bused, along with those from nearby Henrieville, to Tropic to school.- There is a general store and gasoline is available in town. An old gas pump stands near one old building with sign that says "Too pooped to pump!" Nearby unsual rock formations for-mations seem to embrace the little town in a pic turesque setting. ; Its community park in the j center of town was ' developed wholly by local ' residents and gives a restful spot for families to spend a j summer evening and for their children to play. j Not too long ago Indians used to camp on the outskirts j of town and the Indian j children played with the I local children while their j parents traded goods. Just southeast of Can- j nonville is the old ghost town j of Georgetown. Between the two, Clifton used to be located, but nothing remains j to remind today's visitor j that the little town ever j existed. |
